I have not used a 209 primer in a SML, however I have used it in a 50cal with BH 209 and although accurate the amount of blow-back (granted this was a CVA factory plug) was terrible.
From what I have read the 209 system will work effectively if installed by a qualified gunsmith.
I personally use Jeff's HIS system and have had nothing but great results from such.
To each their own, whatever works for you.

What kind of life expectancy do the H.I.S. modules have? For someone who will shoot less than a half dozen shots a year, do I really need 25 of them?

I would rather have too many than too few.

I would rather have too many than too few. Certainly. You only need to look at the scarcity of Savage 10ML-I modules and vent liners to see the need for extras.

My Knights are spotless with a .003 crush on the primer. Not a single one has any shims but they work fine and its simple to set them up if needed. Its super simple to make the CVA plug clean too. Either add an oring to the primer pocket or shim the firing pin bushing. CVA sells the shims for the bushing. Western even includes the orings with their plug. A bag of orings is cheap and last 20 rounds or more each. For a Savage just get a PR SS plug. If you have a barrel nut wrench its pretty simple when using a aftermarket barrel without sights. That plug seals on the nose of the primer. Get a .003-.005 crush on the 209 primer and its good to go. Primers will come out spotless.

I have a TC Encore that I switch between different barrels and changing shims each time was a hassle. However thanks for the post, I'm sure others will find it useful

How long will the shims last In a OEM Knight plug?....probably longer than the brazed in vent liner will last. Max 120gr loads and sabotless will kill those vents pretty quickly. If you go too long i imagine it will eventually damage the shim too.

What kind of life expectancy do the H.I.S. modules have? For someone who will shoot less than a half dozen shots a year, do I really need 25 of them? I started out with 25 old style modules that looked more like a .308 case from the side, lost a few in the woods ect. Jeff found about another 15 of those in the shop and gave those to me. I figure I have 800 plus shots on my gun and modules. So if you average it out over 20 shots per module and still going strong.

Can't seem to find the thread (or may have been in one of his videos) however if memory serves me right Jeff mentioned that I believe he had somewhere between 70-80 shots on a module. As for the number of modules needed just easier to have primed modules on hand when shooting instead of re-priming more frequently, additionally helps to have a few spares if you lose some.

One primer module would last me a lifetime. LOL! I haven't put 70 rounds through a muzzleloader in 20+ years of hunting with one.

I find myself shooting them a ton more than any of my other muzzleloaders/riffles.....including my 22's and AR-15's

I haven't shot recreationally for quite a few years now. I feel guilty blasting my expensive ammo at anything other than an animal while hunting. It was fun back when .223 was a dime a round, but now .22LR is approaching that level. I miss the days of 2-3 cent rimfire. Lol!

I just stopped by the only gunshop in my area that sells primers. All they had for large rifle primers were Winchester WLR #8 1/2 primers. Will these work in an Apex with H.I.S. conversion, or should I hold out for magnum primers?

I had to go to a city north of here today, and stopped in at an Army surplus store that happened to be open on a Sunday, and lo and behold, they had one 1000-round box of large rifle magnum primers -- CCI #250 -- so I bought them.

Sounds like your going with H.I.S. system? Like I mentioned before you won't stop with one build and you'll be holding out on filling all your tags and waiting till Muzzleloader season. I used to focus completely on bow hunting now I wait till December to fill my tags just love shooting my smokeless muzzleloader.

Well I have saw the plug with my own eyes and the flame path is very short since the bushing is recessed way up in the plug. The overall system was well machined.

I used to focus completely on bow hunting now I wait till December to fill my tags just love shooting my smokeless muzzleloader. Yes, I shipped the barrel off to Jeff yesterday. I was torn between having a ramrod attached to the barrel and using a collapsible ramrod, and ended up choosing the collapsible route at the last minute. Now I'm going to have to buy a cheap Lee single stage press to prime modules. LOL! I can buy everything I need to prime/deprime for $68 shipped, so I may as well go that route instead of a hand primer. Bowhunting is still my passion, and I don't foresee that changing. I just traded my Bowtech RPM 360 for a Bowtech Boss, so I'm really looking forward to this October. I just enjoy hunting more when it isn't freezing cold outside. LOL! I used a T/C Omega the last few years during our firearms and muzzleloader seasons here in Indiana, but we finally got some centerfire rifles approved for deer this past season, so my days of packing a muzzleloader are now relegated to the December muzzleloader season only.
