James72 Nice job talk to me about your load. I'm shooting a KP-1 knight 45/70 conversion and love it. Using 57gr IMR 4198 / wool wad with 250gr Pittman's black tip, Fury's star tip 275 @ average 2570 fps. Very accurate. I kill 12/16 whitetails a year under a D-Map program and don't always get the perfect broadside shot. If I do and put it behind shoulder (Miss bone) DRT but if you hit any bone shoulder and or rib the Pittman's just grenade and waste to much meat unacceptable to me. the Fury's not as bad but have lost deer that I've shot with the quartering to me shot like you explained in your post. I shot a small buck this year at 80 yards walking, and he just picked up his front leg turned and walked away. No penetration. Would like to try the 278HC put with such a lite charge not sure if they obitrated to bore. Any thoughts from anyone? My hunting is less than 200 yards. Does Pittman make a 250 grain black tip bullet? Sounds like a Parker to me...

Hey guys, sorry for the confusion. You are correct the bullets that I have had good accuracy are as follows. 275gr Parker Black tips, 275gr Fury star tips, 245gr. Hornady Spire points, and 250gr. SST. 300gr. Precision Rifles DYNAMO. all are very accurate. Gun seems to preferer wool wad no lube. Hornady 245gr about every 8 or 9 shots will have one keyhole target. That leads back to my original question with the light load of 57gr. IMR4198 will the 278gr HC obitrate to the bore diameter?

That explains why you were having problems with the bullet exploding when hitting bone. The Parker BE are known for that. I think you will be much better off with Pittman bullets. Only way to know if you can get good accuracy with the 278HC is to try them. It may shoot great at 57gr 4198 and a wool wad, or you might have to go up a few grains to get it to shoot well. I get better accuracy with 4227 and I don't have to use a wad.

Next was a Yote in Nov. firearms season with my .45 sml NEF. Then we had a antler-less season from Nov.22-26th n i got another Doe on 26th afternoon with the Blk. Dia. .50. We have an Alternative season last of Dec. I shot my Spike on Dec. 23rd late afternoon with my .45 sml.

Was a good year for SML hunting! Scored an ancient ol 8pt w/ Hankins Rem700 #17 Brux build w/ 303HC ~2,750fps. 225yards [offhand] - double lung - ran 50y. Smaller 9pt w/ funky tine was w/ a Scout conversion, 275gr Pittman ~2,500fps. 75 yards - heart +lungs - ran 50y. Can't wait to get back out there next year! Attachments:

- Thanks! Here is my 2022 buck with the same CVA. What was a baby basket rack, we watched til he was 4.5-5.5yr old was chasing a yearling doe Dec 8 last year and came in from 250y to about 75y when rattled to. Typical performance for these rigs - he took one hop and was done. IMG_7308.tiff (796.18 KB)

Nice bucks and always enjoy seeing post with the guns in them Agreed - Here's one more just for kicks. I think this was 2018[?] w/ a 275gr Pittman over 65gr H4198 - older custom SML [CMC, maybe?] 209 primers.
