12/3 early morning it was so foggy I found myself wondering why I was even hunting. To make it worse, I forgot my jacket, and a long sleeve T and thin hoody was barely enough at 36 degrees. Turkeys didn’t come off the roost until almost 7:30 because they couldn’t see the ground. A little breeze moved the fog just enough that I could see this guys outline trying to slip across my lane. He was only 134 yards, but it seemed like 1/2 mile in the fog. I gave a short bleat to stop him, and he turned towards, quartering hard to me. A 328 Pittman Aeromax left the muzzle at 3230, impact velocity would be about 2950. It absolutely hammered him, never even kicked.

Opening day for Ohio gun season. The kids had off school so my daughter was with me in the morning and my son in the afternoon. Had an 8 maybe small 10 bed down 80 yards from us just after 8:00. All I could see was part of one of his times through the trees after we saw him lay down. (I was going to take any possible kill shot on him just to get my daughter the experience of a deer harvest) Didn't have any sort of shot on him at all. Then 15 minutes later a button buck shows up, shortly after that mamma doe walks in. She made us instantly from about 75 yards. We were hunting from the prone position. Very unusual for an eastern woods hunting scenario but I'm telling you it works. She locked onto us but was confused and curious as to what we were, an unusual blob on the forest floor. Well, she closed the distance to 40 yards and that's when I broke the trigger. Dumped her on the spot. This button buck I took mid week as an attempt to achieve a 300 yard kill. Fell 15 yards short of that goal, but still pleased with the results. 285 yards is by far the longest shot I've taken on a deer. Nice shooting! What muzzle cover are you using? I am curious about using one as I have not read many folks talking about it. Thank you sir!

It's a real complicated one. They come 5 in a bundle. As in a thumb plus 4 fingers. It's a nitrile glove. Lol. Cut off one appendage as needed and keep the rest in your pocket for the reload. Been doing it for years, it works great.

First deer with my newest build. Haven’t had much time or cooperative deer. In a bit of an awkward uphill, prone bind at 170ish yds, 72.5 grains IMR 4198, 303 areomax HC. I think it’s a killer on both ends. I was wondering if my nose/eye would stop bleeding 😬🤣. Never had been bit with a scope till today. My doctor friend was willing to suture it up, but I declined. In concussion protocol…not hunting tomorrow. 🤣 Attachments:

I like the scope and from the bench, don’t have an issue. However, in little bit o awkward position, I didn’t have a good shoulder in the stock, got a nice scope bit, and about missed the deer. If I didn’t have a couple of pressing things to due today, I would have been back at. Just a little sore and some much eye black going on. Reminds me of my days as a middle linebacker…..got the adrenaline flowing more so than the deer. I told my wife to remind me not to take a rifle the next time and ruin a good, relaxing hunt 🤣. Even the hard core versions at ( I’m guessing 2800ish fps) can be explosive. The angle wasn’t great, and I lost more meat than I like. I’m considering 2 loads - a slower hunting load around 2400 fps with the 303 HC for most of my hunting purposes and a Cadillac load for targets and the occasional 500-700 yd world that I only hunt about twice a year. Or I’ll leave this rifle set up as such and just carry my others for every day hunting. The tough decisions we have to make in the SML world! Attachments:

I had an Arken EP5 on my 17” CVA Scout and I never got hit with it on the bench or in the field after 7 shots. I shoot free recoil and still never been hit with it. I will say that I do NOT use the factor flip up covers for the scope. If I did I would be worried of getting scope bit. Thanks for posting your pictures!

I HIGHLY recommend an adjustable cheek rest. This way your head recoils with the gun, instead of the gun recoiling into your head. The one's I have been buying are from Matthew's Fabrication. About $60 depending on what you want. Takes simple tools and less than 30 minutes to install. I did all mine with a hand drill. No more scope eye for me.... I hesitate saying that, truthfully. Lol

Shot is doe this evening in KY with Loud Mouth at 134 yards. I was using 53.5 grains of 4227 and a 275 Pittman bullet going 2450 FPS. Bang flop with no meat loss.

Shot this deer a few minutes later using Jeff’s gun called Cyclops checking out the first deer I shot I shot with Loud Mouth at 134 yards. Bang flop only this time I was using a lot of 7828SSC and a 353 grain Pittman HC going 3900 FPS. Now one would think that a bullet going 1,450 faster and 78 grains heavier would blow a masses basketball size hole in the deer but as you can see in the picture the hole isn’t that larger compared to the other deer I shot at the same distance. It’s all about shot placement.
