I have a 45 cal Encore muzzleloader, would it be better to have you convert it to sml or sell it. Then get a 45/70 Custom barrel and get it converted.

Welcome to the board.
I would suggest re-barreling the Savage you have. Of course for what they sell for now perhaps you could sell it and start on a dedicated bolt gun or break open build. The parts are available for a do it yourself no nonsense sml rebuild of your savage sml or savage centerfire or 700ml.
Wait for others to respond if you are wanting to stick to your encore plan as I don't know much about the encore break actions.

I have a encore, i sold my.50 cal ml barrel, then had bullberry barrels in utah, make me a 45-70 pac-nor barrel, then sent it to jeff, for the HIS conversion, It was the cheapest way for me to start, in future I will have jeff build me a dedicated sml, I like being able to change barrels out on the encore, Imo..

Did you look at getting a barrel from MGM or just went with Bullberry, were you satisfied with accuracy and velocity you got?

I would recommend going with a cut rifled barrel from Hankins custom guns. Or if you want to push "Hot Rod" loads....and you will. Then I recommend forgoing the Encore route and doing a dedicated bolt action SPML gun. Drop

I;m very happy with it! you can order any barrel , from any maker, cut rifling or button rifling, and just send it to them to finish, for me it is a great carry, woods, stand gun, I'm in the process of building 1 now for grandson.. Call or pm jeff (hank), he will put you in right direction..

I did the same thing. I did not have Bullberry machine in a brake so I don't shoot hot loads with it.

I have a 45 cal Encore muzzleloader, would it be better to have you convert it to sml or sell it. Then get a 45/70 Custom barrel and get it converted. Depending on the twist rate you have in you existing barrel would be the determining factor as to plug it with a HIS plug and start shooting smokeless.. The other options are some after market barrels and full blow custom barrels. Bergara barrel being you least expensive way to get started and it will have good accuracy. Bullberry, and MGM, is the higher end barrels and they will also shoot very good. Just depends on what you intended purpose is for the rifle, woods and hunting under 300 I'd say you're fine with an Encore conversion, over 300 and I'd do a high performance bolt gun...

Thanks for the input, most of my hunting is woods, but sometimes I feel the need for speed, I'll be calling when I figure out what I want.

I too went with the 45-70 Bullberry and Jeff did the conversion on my Encore. My purpose was a SML to shoot deer out to 300 yards. Couldn't be happier with the results.

I had to sand the stock down so it wasn't touching barrel and some trigger work to get a smoother pull but it will shoot 2600fps all day long. Great carry gun! Good luck, it's just the beginning!

I shimmed the for end with some o rings it also sort of acts like a barrel dampener , allows for that dollar bill float also thru a Bellims trigger kit into it shoots 225 ftx formed. Less than 1" groups at 100, 6 in plate at 200 works good also .

Just wondering what powder and load combo you were using with the 250 SST's?

12/52 4759/IMR4198 around 2650fps[/quote]
Do you know what pressure that load creates and/ or if it would be safe to fire from an apex 45-70 bergara conversion? Thanks
