Saturday Nov 9, 2019 was the “modern “ gun opening for the entire state of Arkansas. However, the NE corner has only 2 days of season for most of this section with a little narrow strip of hills (Crowley’s Ridge) getting a full 4 days: 9,10 and 16,17 of November for gun season (shotgun, MLer, straight necked cartridge pistols).
‘Anyway, I hunt about 400 acres 13 miles away, on a lease I’ve had for 37 years and behind my house on 110 acres. Two moderately mature bucks have been on camera sporadically at the lease and one nice 11-12-pt on my land.
‘I decided to go to the lease where I had a blind at the end of a small semi-circular field . About 100 yards from my stand there was a well worn trail crossing the field between two 40-50 acres of woods on each side. Got to my blind at 6:15 after a 1/2 mile walk, got my monopod adjusted, opened all 4 drop down windows but kept the mesh up. Then within 10 minutes, a doe came running into the middle of the field, on that path, stopped and stared straight towards my blind, that has been there for 3-4 years, in a thicket, well hidden. Wind from her to me. Well hidden in the blind, I put up the monopod, Duralyt on 8x, safety off, mesh still in place. Then the buck came out, and stood there facing me with about a 30 degree angle off, and stared in my direction. It was one of the two bucks. I aimed just forward of the shoulder and where the bullet should exit just forward of the diaphragm. I squeezed, aiming 3” lower than desired impact point (sighted-in 3” hi @100, on @200). The deer almost went down, but wheeled and took off but obviously impaired. If like most hits with the 200SST there was no pass-thru, the deer should have asorbed the entire 2515ft lbs of energy(energy @100 yards from ballistics program).
‘I reloaded (10.2g VV110/50g H4198, wool wad, knurled 200SST, LBHS, CCIm - 2710’/sec). Went out and saw the the deer had only gone 10-15 yards. Dead! No passthrus, but two fragments of the bullet were on the opposite side, under the skin. The entire heart/lung area was a mess. Barely can see the entrance hole. However, there was a lot of blood on the grass. Through the nose and mouth.
When I took it to the processor, 4 Arkansas G&F trucks and 8 officials were there. Fortunately, I had all my “i’s” dotted and “t’s” crossed. They did a lot of measurements, weighed the deer (171# gutted and bled), 13 allowable points.
‘This Gun has killed a 161”, a 177 “(State MLer record that year - my son), numerous 130+” deer, mostly by my son. As archaic as it is, it’s just has its place in our house as long as I live.
I think this is the second Savage 10ML2/45PacNor made. In 2002 or 3 , I used it, still belonged to RB then, to kill 2 nice bucks with the suggested load of 53g H4198 under a knurled 275BE(they were 0.450 back then). The 275 BE , even going that slowly, was a very frangible bullet.
