Just got done bedding a gun with JB weld . Set time is 4 to 6 hours cure time 15+ hours . Would I be better off to try to get the gun broke loose in 4 to 6 hours or wait until morning ?

Everyone does things a little differently, but I always wait until the bedding completely dries before I break the action loose.

I always wait just to prevent the odd case that it isn't set well and you ugly up your nicely done job by getting it out too early.
Don't worry.....if it ain't stuck in the stock in 4-6 hours it won't be stuck tomorrow. On the other hand if you did make a boo boo and it is stuck you don't want to be up all night cussing and trying to get it loose.

Go to bed and pop it loose in the morning.

I remembered my first one and I was scared it wouldn't pop either. I had to hit it pretty good with dead blow to get it to pop loose. I waited over night you'll be fine.

Seems like I always pucker a little when I get rough with it but they always pop loose for me by hand. Never used JB because it is so runny and slow setting. I would wait un til the next day at least.

Longer you wait the better.

Hey she turned out pretty good for a first timer . I put 2 coats of car wax on everything and then spayed a coat of Pam on the gun. It pulled right apart . I used JB weld just because of what I have read . I own a bodyshop shop and I'm sure I have different products that would work . What is preferred for a bedding job?

It gives one plenty of work time (I"m SLOW) with fantastic results. Clear Kiwi boot polish is also a fantastic release agent. The downside to Devcon is that the kit comes in a large enough quantity to bed at lease half a dozen guns, and if not used for a period of time, the hardener goes bad. I don't believe that JB has that problem.

I'm sure JB did a good job and I hate that I came across negatively about using it. I used to use it in 2 stroke engine porting and always cursed it for being too runny. You can add silica, sawdust, or even microballoons to thicken it. I prefer Devcon as it comes just right without adding anything.

I have been using Marine-Tex for many, many years now. It is also sold by Bruno Shooter Supply who is probably one of the biggest dealers to the benchrest crowd.......if that means anything. I have used Devcon in the past also with good results. Any of the paste shoe polishes are good release agents. Right now, I am using Johnson's floor paste wax and all my jobs break loose with no problem. More than one way to skin a cat.

It was a pain mixing it but the longer I went the smoother it got. When I popped the rifle out you could never tell as the bedding was smooth as glass and it is still going strong. Not sure I'd try it again but I wanted to get the project done and probably got lucky. Don

What is Devcon and where can I get it ? My JB weld job turned out great . It's nice and smooth but I could see where a thicker material would be nice at times . I assume when someone talks about glass bedding a rifle they are referring to fiberglass ?

I assume when someone talks about glass bedding a rifle they are referring to fiberglass ? You can get the deacon fro MSC or Grainger. It is basically the same a JB weld just a little thicker in vescosity. Glass bedding is almost the same as fiberglass. It is basically resin and flauk ( finely cut fiber glass) mixed together to make a paste. Much like the old kitty hair but without the I have use both and prefer the devcon
