Is it ok to smooth size barnes bullets? I bought a few TEZ today, but wanted to see if it better to smooth or rifle size them. Trying to get everything ready for this big upcoming weekend.

Ronnie.. Don't side them till you get to the shoot.. Then you will be able to talk to some of the experts.

As Jeff stated the shoot will have people there to help. I know Zen smooth sizes his with great results. You could do as Richard does and I have done by knurling then up then full size the bullet but neither Richard or I have seen results that prove it's better. You might get a little better seal with full form and help in ignition but if your worried about ignition I'd go to duplex unless your shooting "HIS" then I wouldn't worry about ignition.
For deer hunting purposes smooth sizing is only way to go. That's just my 2 cents worth though.

I am still up in the air rojo23? I have gotten good results both ways. Hopefully tomorrow I will get some more results to ponder! One would think that if the bullet had some rifling engraved on it when it goes down the bore that it should shoot better? But, I have shots groups as small and even smaller when it did not have rifling on it?.........Go figure?

my best 3 shots ever were FF but from a pistol sized bore, I think its a toss up, I shoot both ways with good results BUT I use .458 bullets for FF in the new Brux barrels and they shoot very well. I have yet to try FF in the gun Im bringing to the shoot though..

I'm wondering if knurling them up to .454 is enough material to get a good 'footing' on the lands and grooves after ff'ing. I knurled some of these up but I was using medium course mill files. I did get some engraving when full forming but shallow. I have on order 2 course double cut 'bastard' files. I'll be interested to see if if I can get them to size up any larger in diameter using these. Until then I'm still working with proper smooth sizing to get these to shoot well out of my gun. I am optimistic. Waiting till I can get out and try them.
I am a believer in the duplex. When I've used 10/50 and hotter of 4759/4198 I've gotten good results with the Hornady 250 and I feel with a tighter fit, with those and the Barnes 250's, I can get good results. I like the sound and feel of that duplex load also. Just a nice crisp CRACK!
Like Richard has said, you just have to experiment till you get the right combo.

Keep a v e r y c l o s e eye on those file teeth when using the pressure needed to get those bullets larger in diameter! Embedded file tooth in the bullet can equal a disaster in your rifle bore. Don't ask me how I know, having posted it a number of times on the other board.

The pistol sized bore I mentioned was a Mcgowen .442/.451, it really liked the 300 MH
