Tuesday morning started out at 71* with high humidity, no wind but a threatening chance of rain------------which it subsequently did. Chronographing stopped after group #4 as steady rain came down. Wet targets with pointy bullets do not make for clean holes. For anyone new reading this, it .45 cal. Sabot less in a 28” Brux/Rem. 700ML, 14 lb. rifle with 6.5 x 20 Vortex BDC scope shot from a modified tracking lead sled. My cooling rod was used pretty much after each three shots unless there was a break for BS or whatever. I fouled the barrel with the same load as last week….200 gr. FTX with 10/60 Clays/H-4198 at 3011 fps. Last week it was 3004 fps. The powder charge for the eight groups was the same as last week---8/58 Clays/H-4198 and .060” veggie wad used under all bullets EXCEPT group #6 where I used no wad. The full formed bullets are actually .451/.452 bullets knurled up to .455 ---Then run thru the FF die for a relatively moderately loose fit. NO .458 bullets used. This week I tried some new(er) bullets along with my more favored 290 TEZ. Group #1 was the Parker 300 gr. BE FF . My first shot was out of the subsequent group and I am guessing (don’t know for sure) the barrel might have needed a second fouling shot as the next four produced a .826” group with #1 making it 1.3” @ 2668 fps with a 31 fps ES. #2 was the Parker 275 BE FF at 2717 fps with a 15 fps ES and a 1.0” group. #3 The Parker 250 BE FF @ 2645 fps with a 3 fps ES and a .495” group. #4 is the Barnes 290 TEZ FF @ 2645 fps with a 16 fps ES and a .791” group #5 again is the 290 TEZ but smooth sized---------at this point the rain started and chronograph was removed for the rest of the shooting. A decent .636” group resulted and actually a tad tighter than the FF group above. Note: All these groups were shot using the X-hair at 100 yards. Moving out to 300 yards, based on last weeks information I went to the second BDC (below the x-hairs) and turned the scope power from 20 to 16X. I tried three shots with the 290 TEZ FF with NO wad and got a 2.460 group. #7 used 290 TEZ FF with the wad which resulted in the smallest FIVE shot ML group I believe I have ever shot (had three shots that small but never five) Here three in a row—2, 3 & 4 = .772” . All five = 1.199” with the best three @ .326” At this time I made a scope adjustment---------Moved the windage 2 (1/4”) clicks to the left and one click down. Shooting the same load to verify my adjustments I started group #8. First shot??? Hmmm? It moved over but not down?..............Fire #2—Yup, went down as did the next four shots. Thus the six shot group. I am discounting shot #1 and maybe blaming it on the scope adjustment needing a jolt to properly locate??? Yeah, maybe me but funny the rest of the shots moved down. So again, the TEZ is working nicely. The 300 BE’s looked that they might also be a contender but I only brought a few to get an idea how they would perform. Next week I will bring more. I also amazes me how closely the 290 TEZ works both smooth and full formed (FF) Richard upload pictures freephoto storage

Rambler...........try for some Red Dot or even Blue Dot. RD and Clays are about as close to 100% the same as possible. Blue and Green Dot are a little slower but some are getting good results with them also. Richard

Richard... That is some pretty good shooting... Looks like everyone at the shoot better be on their toes when they come to the bench... That 300 yard group would be hard to beat any day of the week..
Thanks for posting.
Jeff.

Scott I have an eight pound jug from probably 1998 I bought up in NJ when I was shooting trap. Moved south in 2000 and it sat with very little use as I only shot a little sporting clays and already had close to 3K shotgun shells loaded. I just peaked in the jug and believe I still have at least four pounds left It lasts forever when you only use 5 to 10 gr. per shot. Thats 700 shots per pound and many of my loads were much less than that. Since I have only been using Clays for the past 2 -3 years, you can see why I have a lot left. See if you can get Red Dot. It burns at the same rate and gives the same velocities. I bought a pound just to compare. Richard

I'm excited about the TEZ since that is about the best hunting bullet I know of. Does anyone have an idea about the BC for the 290 TEZ? Richard, about how far do they drop at 300 yards? The state I hunt in other than Hawaii is Utah, where you are only allowed a one power scope. So your scope limits you to 400 yard shots at most. The 290 grain TEZ may be as accurate and effective as any bullet out to 400 yards.

They need to be about 8" high at 100 to be on at 300 with the 290's traveling around 2650 fps if that gives you some idea? I like playing with the BDC dots in my new Vortex 6.5 x 20X. With the 290 dead on at 100 I can go to the the second BDC @ 20X and be dead on at 300. Now if I go with the same load and the 250 TEZ without touching the scope adjustments? I have use the 2nd. BDC and hold five inches low to be on at 300. I found by playing with the power adjustments that I could go to the 1 st. BDC if I crank the power down to 8X. I am not one to be playing with "click" adjustments!
