just came back from range with grandson, shooting a break open encore, 28in pac-nor, 1-20, and 250 grain hornadays ftx. 56 grains 4198, shot 18 rounds, and every 3rd or 4th shot keyholed, any suggestions on why?

Any time I had key holing with sabots it was because of blowing the sabot.

If you are using sabots and getting keyholing. You have blown the sabots. I'd recommend doing a really good cleaning of your barrel to get sabot residue out before you continue shooting.

If he has a .45 barrel he is not using enough powder with the light bullet. I would tighten the sizing and bump the charge weight up to 60 or so, the bullet is not swelling enough.
If its a .50 barrel you are blowing sabots

Yeah, what everybody needs to know? 50 with sabots or 45 and sabotless? AND that barrel needs good brush cleaning if it was sabots.

If the bullets are hitting on the target board and keyholing with sabots.................I would not "necessarily" blame blowing sabots as the problem? The bullets might be slipping inside the sabots and just not stabilizing? I would put good aggressive knurl on the bullets so they don't slip and give that a try? Try shooting where the area in front of the muzzle is clear of old sabots. You should be able to find one that is all torn and curled up if your blowing them. Those little frayed edges on the skirt do not mean you are blowing the sabot. Also, missing petals is not a sign of blowing sabots. A blown sabot will look all twisted and gnarly!

If its a .50 barrel you are blowing sabots thanks bill,it is a 45, smooth form, at 100, I would shoot 2 or 3, most touching, then a keyhole, I will try 60 grains and see what happens.. also maybe a 300gr, with 56 grains thanks..

I didn't read that you were using a wad wad under the bullet. If not try a .060 veggie wad and that might take care of it.
