New to long range shooting and optics. All my shooting has been 400 yard and under hunting situations. Most my guns are set up with duplex recticles and a few boone & Crocket. Im in the planning stage of a long range 45 cal sml build now. The gun will be for 90% hunting use probably 400 to 500 yds and under. Most of the time probably 200yds and under but would like to do some paper shooting up to 800 yards. Do like ilumination also. What you guys suggest?

I should add. Hunting situations are mostly big game, deer, bear etc. And a occasional coyote and wolf.

I love my vx3i leupold. It's a 4.5x14x40 and it does everything I need as far as hunting. As far as shooting paper at 800 you may want more magnification. I always wanted a nightforce just cant afford one.

If you are happy with Leupold there are some very good deals out there right now on some Mark 4 models. The good thing about Leupold is the custom shop can change things out in several models. Also, the HD VX5 and VX6 lines offer great options.

I would also go with 30mm tube for some xtra elevation and a fine crosshairs for paper shooing that far.

I'm not a big Leupold fan as I have had many fail on these guns but each to their own. Elkman seems to like his Nikon Black 1000, might be worth looking into? the Sightron S-Tac 2.5x17.5 has been very good so far, good glass, good turrets and Illumination but kind of heavy.

Hank says he has only seen one nightforce failure on all his builds IIRC. I bought 1 Nightforce NSX 8X32X56 for a build. I liked it so much I bought another one for the next build a year later. Saving for my next build now and most likely it will have a Nightforce NSX series on it also. There ar many opinions out there. Just like Ford Chevy Dodge. Everyone has their Idea of what is best in their collection. I have the utmost confidence in Nightforce. Buy once cry once. Or one and done. Research long and hard. A Bad scope can leave lasting frustration. Drop

I busted Leupold VX6 scopes twice. Leupold bought the last one back and I went with Nightforce. Couldn't be happier.

I guess budget would be 2 grand and under. What recticle would you recomend and power also. Couldnt that 8 power on the bottom end be a little much in some deer hunting situations?

Yes it can, depends on the type of hunting you do. for mixed hunting, woods/fields I would go no higher than 6 on the low end, even 4 or 5. For big fields the 8x32 will work but you will likely never zoom any higher than 24. the upper end is nice on the bench though.
the 2.5x17.5 is hard to beat for a do all scope, plenty low on the low end, fairly thin reticle but with an Illuminated dot. 4x24 or 5x25 can serve as a field/ target scope as well.
Nightforce NXS 5.5x22 is a very good scope, not cheap but good. there are so many scopes to choose from now it's hard to make a decision. I have a Sig 5x25, so far it has been good but I have not shot it enough or dialed enough to know exactly.
Check Athlon's higher end scope, great reviews on it out there at a decent price point.
Do your home work and take your time to make a decision.

You have a lot of good choices with your budget,Hillbill is correct, Nightforce is very tough with lots of good reticle options.

I have a Nightforce SHV 5-20 Illuminated MOA Reticle on my build from Jeff. Couldn't be happier with it. You can get them for about $1100.00 new

On the S-Tac I have the moa-2 i think. I really like it, If it were not Illuminated though the reticle would be a little thin but with the Illumination it is great.
The SHV rpl is referring to is also a very good scope, not as wide a mag range as the NXS but not as pricey either.

Leupold Vx5hd 3-15x44 cds zl2 windplex are a rock solid hunting scope.
Vx6 definitely will fail.
Vx6hd is solid scope.
Sightron are tuff as nails also

If I had the coins I would buy a March 2.5x25x52, I have always wanted to try one. fairly compact and not real heavy but great glass and from what I read very good adjustments, not cheap though.

I have the Nightforce NSX 8 by 32 it has the Moar T reticle in it pretty much the same as the Moa are except for the crosshairs are finer and the only part that lights up is the small Red Cross in the very center works great for both worlds Target world's 32 power you can lose the crosshairs in the wood lines when it's dusk there for you just turn on the red Illumination in all is well Drop
