I have had 2 Zeiss fail on SML guns. So far my 2 Nightforce have been rock solid. One is a NXS and the other a SHV. The NXS has the NP-R2 reticle which has been discontinued in the NXS line. I have the MOAR FFP in my SHV and I would not buy another FFP for the type hunting I do. Buying parts for my next build now and it will have a Sightron or Nightforce on top of it.
I have owned 1 Leupold in my life and will not own another. The guy I sold it to still has it and loves it. Just didn't compare to my Zeiss at the time on a center fire rifle.

I wrecked a Leupold vx-7 predecessor to vx-6. Now I use Burris VTR-ii 4-20 moa and its great I really like it. It's not the best target because of FFP recticle but for hunting it doesn't get much better in my opinion it has 34mm tube on it so it great for dawn-dusk shots; has zero stop and better dial knobs than Leupold and shv Nightforce. You can get several different magnifactions depending on your needs, and it's Less than a $1000. Just for your information lap scope rings and if the scope won't stand a 50 cal it won't take these muzzleloaders( if smokeless and bolt action).

When I was shooting the 10ML2 with factory and factory+ loads and using mediocre scopes, I went thru scopes like going thru supply. Eventually, I used a Nightforce 3.5x15 56 mm and quit tearing up scopes. Now that I’m shooting 40 and 45s with lighter loads and lighter , cheaper scopes, I’ve had no scope failures in a few thousand shots. As most members of this board know far better than I, a scope has a variety of attributes: glass quality, accuracy of adjustment, and many more. So far, using cheaper scopes (Weaver Classic Extremes (4), Bushnell 4200s (2), Sightron 2s, etc, I’ve yet to have a failure. Still, I want a really good Sightron 3, Nightforce, ect to go on my 40 cal. In time, I’ll be asking for advice.
PS As we all know, there’s a world of difference shooting a 195g -225g bullet up to 2700-2800’/sec off the shoulder and a 275g - 325 g bullet at 2800-3000’/sec off a lead sled type of rest. Those of us who shoot the former can likely get by with less robust scopes; however, it’d be nice to have at least one, relatively no compromise , long range smokeless MLer. As I enter into 90% retirement in a week, I’ll have to see how it goes from a financial standpoint. Capital gains taxes can be really a pain in the neck, upon selling and retiring!!

Since you have a good budget to work with you can afford to look at some of the NightForce models. Since your range is really not long in todays world of long range shooting a variable up to 20 power would be plenty. I like 3x15 or 4x16 power scopes with nice target knobs. The Illumination feature is more of a waste of money as long as the reticle you use is heavy enough so that you can see it in low light the #4 Germany reticle on my Sig is excellent for low light and just the center is lighted I rarely turn it on. The Nikon Black 1000 has been working really good for me so far I have about 100 rounds through the gun with this scope mounted on it. It holds POI and it does repeat the optics are good especially for the cost of this scope.
For the distance you want to shoot I would take a look at the Sightron S-Tac 2.5x17.5x56 heck a of scope I have several Sightrons and they have always performed very well. The new Gen2 Vortex is nice and so is the new Sig Sauer whiskey 5 model they change to target turrets they have good glass and their built like a tank. Then the SHV NF would also fill the bill. Once you get pass the $1,200.00 mark the difference in optical improvement can hardly be detected It comes down to internal components used in the turrets. I am also not a fan of Leupold scopes at one time that's all I had now I only have two left.

Well, just now in the middle of this thread, I just shot a nice doe with my Excalibur Matrix 405/HHA Optimizer/ 2-8 Zeiss Duralyt lighted. Used a 20” Zombie, helical Blazers , original 125g Spitfire. Life is good! I’m half a mile behind my house.

Got it narrowed down the march and the stac. Which recticle? Would like to go S111 over the STAC if it had a similiar power range to the stac 2.5-17

Do y'all think a Nikon prostaff 5 would hold up on a sml? I used one on a break open for a few years but I'd cross my fingers every time I pulled the trigger. I ended up putting it on a .270 and putting a stouter unit on the break open.

If your going S111 take a look at the 6x24x50 with MOA reticle had several through my shop very nice glass. They come with Ill. but that's quite a bit more money over the standard scope. Rambler its seems that break actions really are hard on scopes. The Nikon Black 1000 is the first Nikon I have used for my personal gun I know of others and they seem to hold up well as long as you stay away from the lower end entry level scopes. The only scopes I had fail immediately were the Bushnell Legend HD 4x14x50 it knock the side focus out on everyone I tried it held POI but you had a heck of a time clearing the scope up unless you tapped it on the side of the scope tube and then it only worked half the time. No more Bushnell's for me.

If you go with that March or Nightforce you'll be good to go. Make sure and get a good base that is properly bedded and quality 6 screw rings.

I'm going to let Jeff mount it while he's building it. He said he used nightforce base with 6 8-40 bolts.

I prefer the Vortex Razor for their ruggedness, price, and warranty. Just ordered my fourth Razor optic. Prefer Aadland mount and rings but there are other good ones.

NightForce are tough scopes if I was getting one for the Shooting you want to do it would be a NXS 3.5-15 or an AtacR 4-16 power. You should also check out the new Vortex PST Gen 2 in 3-15 power. Staying in the 4-16 power range will do everything you want to be able to do, don't really need higher power. Also the high power scopes usually will weigh more.
