Most of the shooting of the .45 caliber rifles seem to be done with 275 grain or heavier bullets. I am sure that there is a reason for this that has to do with ballistics and performance. I just don't know what the reason is. Can someone enlighten me.
With the MLIIs, I shot from 240 grain up to 300 grain saboted with good accuracy. I am just curious as to whether non saboted 250 grain bullets have been tried and if so, how they perform.

The heavier bullets tend to have a better Ballistic Coefficient, more penetration and less devastation than lighter ones. The 250 is a great Bullet for lower recoil and lower impact velocities. In my opinion they are ideal for break action conversations bullet to bore.

Heck, I have gotten good results with many bullets from the lowly 200 gr. XTP/FTX, 225 FTX, 250 FTX and others? With the right load! Therein lies the trick. The heavier bullets seem to shoot better with most loads due to their weight! It takes the heavier resistance to get the bullet to obturate properly. With the lack of weight, you need to get the heat up quickly (at least for Sabot-Less). Saboted is another story. Long range use of light bullets gets a bit dicey due to the low BC. I believe there have been a ton of venison put on the table with bullets in the 250 gr. range!

Thanks guys. I was just wondering. I wanted to try to see if I could get 250 grain bullets to shoot well on paper, but just didn't see much out there.
Should the loads be the same as saboted loads? I have some 5744, RL 7 and N120 that I want to play with using some 250 xtps and dead center bullets I have laying around.

I dont think you will want to shoot the Dead Center bullets sabotless . They are lead . You will have lead fouling problems . Been there tried that. I have shot some pretty good groups with Barnes 250 grain bullets . They are a little longer than the SST or FTX bullet . I think Richards buddy Herman has shot some killer groups with 250 grain FTX bullets

Thanks for the heads up Doug. I'll stick with the xtps.

I shot the Barnes 250 TEZ out of my apex conversion before I sold it and they shot great. perfect bullet to hunt whitetails with out to 300 yards in my opinion.

250 grain Barnes Tez is a great hunting bullet killed several deer with them. I still shoot them in my apex.

Parker 250 b.e. smooth formed In my scout 209 with 55gr h4198 shoots great. Around 2400 fps I believe and noticeable less recoil than the 275 grainers

Wind!
all @ 2800fps/10mph crosswind.
250? -200yds-drift 7.5" ////// 400yds-36.5" 275be-200yds-drift 5.8" ////// 400yds-27.0"
325accumax-200yds drift 4.0"///// 400yds-17.0"
these are ball park estimates with just 10mph wind.

My go-to hunting rifles are break opens and I have killed a bunch of deer and hogs with 250gr bullets. Like SCH said, the duplex he listed is awesome with 209 primers. With lrmp, I use 60 to 65gr of imr4198. The 250 sst will seperate but the 250gr TC shockwave is identical and will not seperate. I have a pacnor 45 barrel that used to shoot barnes 250 TEZ all day long at 1/2 moa. Then one day, it wouldnt do it any more.

That is a lots of drift for a 10 mph wind. Did not realize it was that much.

I do most of my shooting with 250gr Barnes TEZ (hunting) and Hornady 250gr FTX (target practice). I almost always duplex and, for me, 10gr of N110 with 40-55gr of IMR4198, so far, works the best. This is out of a 45 cal McGowen, Pac-Nor, and a Brux barrel. The amount of 4198 depends on what the shooter can handle and what range I'm going to hunt at. This was my last range session. hanksmessageboard.freeforums.net/thread/2543/youth-season-practice-session-rempac

I ordered quite a bit of powder including 1 pound of N110. They had free shipping for the day so it offset the hazmat charge. I also ordered a box of 250 grain FTX.
