Since things on the board have been a bit slow I thought I would mention the 600 yard matches I attend once a month at the Piedmont Gun Club in Rutherfordton NC. It is a beautiful range with 16 covered benches. The matches are shot just like the 1,000 yard IBS bench rest matches only with the targets reduced. By far, the most popular caliber is 6mm. Most use some form of the 6mm Bench Rest case. Some shoot it as it was originally designed by Remington and others, myself included, play with re arranging the shoulder angle and length of the case body. The two popular wildcats are the BRX which has the shoulder moved forward .100" and kept at 30* and the Dasher which also has the shoulder moved .100 forward but changed to 40*. Each version increases the case capacity a little more.
In the case of my 6mmBRX, I load 33 gr. of Varget with either the 108 Berger BT or the 107 Sierra MK to a velocity of 2950 fps. Last week I tried some Re-15 with the Berger and it seemed to be shooting pretty well so tomorrow, I am going to shoot that load in one class and the MK/Varget load in the other class (Light gun and heavy gun). I shoot the same gun in both classes. For heavy gun, I add some leather saddle bags filled with shot which brings the 16 1/2 lb. light gun up to around 30 lbs. or so.
The matches generally get anywhere from about 35 to 50 shooters which necessitates several relays. We shoot a total of four targets in each class. FIVE shots on each target. There is a sighter period prior to each target. Once we start on the record target, you are not allowed to shoot any sighters. All feeding is single shot. Typically once the sighter period ends there is about 5 seconds before the commence fire on the record target starts.........at that point, you hope the "condition" remains and you reel off your five shots as fast as you can. Hopefully you get them off before the condition changes...........even though you have 10 minutes. Most shooters are done in well under one minute and 30 sec. in not uncommon. To do this, you have to have very good rests and bags and the rifle has to track well. You loads have to be such that the bolt opens and closes very easily so you disturb your POA as little as possible.......if not, it takes more time to get back on target.
The targets get scored for both group size and actual score. Winners are generated in both group and score.
Like most of the country, NC has been experiencing a lot of wind......hopefully, it will not be a problem tomorrow!
I see the golfers are having their hand full at the Masters in Georgia, with the wind!
Typically, if the wind is mild, you will need to average 2" or less for FOUR five shot targets and your score will need to be in the upper 190's.
