What is the muzzle velocity of the load out of your muzzleloader that you hunt whitetail deer with?

I said under 2000 fps. Much lower...more like 1500. Kills great inside 150 yds. I used to shoot 250 TMZ's at almost 2,900 from my savage....325 FTX's at 2,500. A total waste for the shots I take. Ruined a lot of deer with these loads. Face it... this is .458 Win Mag territory. I was in this arena planning for the once in a million shot at long range where you need the speed. But after 10+ years of killing deer inside 100Yds and smushing them very badly...I downloaded because the goal is to eat these tasty creatures and not waste them. Just my approach with what I deal with in the field. Not judging those who have a shooting house over a food plot who plan for the longer range. I do love "hunting" deer as opposed to shooting them in the next time zone. Just me. To each his own.
P.S. I also like knowing 99.9% that what I shoot at dies with one shot....not worrying about turrets, wind, range, etc. I save that for targets and fun. Usually those targets remind me that a long range shot is never guarenteed with a hunting gun, wind and user error. Not to say that others can't extend the range with high precision. I just choose to test my limits on targets and not game I intend to eat. Just me.

I'm shooting about 2350 or 2400 when hunting. All I've shot is sabot loads.

depending on which gun: most times I shoot a 300 @ 2700 or so in the .45s my sons gun gets a 275 @ 2600, its easier on his shoulder the .375 shoots a 300 CE @ 2837 avg

I shoot bullets with more than 105gn spread but can keep them within 300fps of one another most of the time. I average about 2650fps with my 344gn, go 150fps faster with 302gn, and about 200fps slower with 415gn. I feel like we must be struggling with stuff to talk about lately since we are poling topics we've talked to death.

24 people have participated in this poll in the last 14 hours with many choosing to provide written responses. I don't view this thread as a struggle to find something to talk about. If you do maybe you should start your own thread.

I enjoy the polls keep them coming! Shooting sabots the topic has to be pretty general for me to offer anything of value to most of you.

The places I currently have access to hunt usually only offer shots @ < 150 yds. so I don't need any extra "oomph" to reach out there like the guys shooting longer distances do.
Therefor, I like to keep my velocities as low as possible to help limit meat damage with the bullets I'm shooting.
Both of my SML's are currently setup for shooting at these shorter distances as follows;
.50 Cal. Savage shooting 275/300 gr. Saboted bullets = approx. 2200 fps .45 Cal. Apex shooting 195/200 gr. saboted bullets = approx. 2200-2300 fps.
Now that I've added the Apex to the stable, which will be my dedicated woods/treestand gun, I may go ahead and set my Savage back up as my "long range/field gun", should an opportunity to hunt at those distances present itself.

24 people have participated in this poll in the last 14 hours with many choosing to provide written responses. I don't view this thread as a struggle to find something to talk about. If you do maybe you should start your own thread. It isn't a personal assault. I wasn't saying people don't respond or that responding is a difficult struggle. I was saying the board is slow lately so we are polling small talk in an attempt to keep it going: How fast is your gun? About the same speed as everyone else who shoots a standard load for which there are a zillion traces (hyperbole). How far do you kill deer? 200yds or less mostly? Weird me too. Does wind blow a bullet more unpredictably than gravity pulls it down? Yeah, same reason place kickers miss left/right more often than short. What kind of gas mileage does my Tacoma get? Same as yours as long as you didn't do something retarded like making it a mini-monster truck. See what I'm saying? I know we aren't collecting data points for a Hunter's Education case study. Sharks die if they aren't swimming. Boards are the same way. I'm saying let's talk about something more substantial. Sorry if I hit a raw nerve. I don't start threads here or Dougs like Richard doesn't start threads on the other board. I'm over the BS. My last thread was a simple, "if you never used H322 it's worth a look." Just a courtesy post because I tried it and it worked really well, no technical data or analysis, and it still got sharpshot. I've now shot a full pound of it (took 10 days) and my data doesn't match that other small sample rebuttal at all. Now I just peruse what goes on in the event there is something interesting or in case someone needs help I can provide whether you believe math and science or not.

Yes the board has been slow lately, it's that time of year when people get out and do other things.. Posting on the message board is not always the first and most important thing to do,, but instead of being negative when someone creates a new thread, try to be more positive.. Look at it in a good way and that the new thread gives us things to talk about.. It doesn't matter if it's been talked about before or not,, you might remember it was discussed three years ago, but we have new members that might not have seen it,, three years ago they might not have even been shooting SPML's.
So if you see a thread topic and you want to respond and give your advice please do so,,, but also please keep the negativity out.. Negativeness brings everybody to a screeching hault..
Message boards are hard to read sometimes because there are no expression in words,, so when reading these boards take into consideration that the message was most likely typed out using a smart phone, while driving down the road, or sitting at work,,, I would say most of the time the message is not proof read for mistakes and my phone changes words on me all the time,,,, so if I don't go back and fix them it would be hard to understand sometimes what I'm even saying.. So let's be polite to everyone, proof read our messages, add punctuation when appropriate .,?!'"&(): and that will help.
Also,,,,, this board has many more topics to talk about other than modern muzzleloaders.. I know a lot of you are getting ready for turkey season and fishing this summer,, so if you want to you can talk about that stuff on this board also..
As a whole,,, I think this board is doing great.,, we are less than a year old and have 248 members and a ton of lookers every day... I ask all you guys to keep up the good work and keep making this the best place to be for friendship, knowledge and good honest conversation..

I think the board is doing great overall, and we have a great bunch of folks here.
I enjoy being a part if it and all it has to offer.

I'm pretty much just a step above smokers but that is large when you count bad weather dependability, cleaning and terminal performance. 300 gr FN at .458 out of the 50 and 200 SST out of the 45 so mine are saboted loads. No problem killing deer at any angle out to 200. I'm very happy. they also kill turkeys like lightning too. 10
