Forgot my brake!
.45 Rem/Brux
OK, so no big deal, I shoot off of a very nice lead sled so the recoil factor was not present…………….but, man, the gun wants to jump out of the front rest! Left the brake on my cleaning bench! NO major shift in POI based on last weeks shooting of similar loads and bullets. Was the accuracy the same? Maybe yes and maybe no. Hard to tell.
The weather was 50* and sunny but some wind was present on and off and kind of hard to tell when it was blowing enough to move the bullets a bit. Not a hard wind, but then you don’t need much to move these low BC bullets a little. Starting with a clean barrel I used some 300 gr. XTP’s as I have a few and they are readily available and affordable. I had some load in my box that I wanted to use up…………7/65 if 4759/H-4198. I used .060” veggie wads under every load I shot today. With this load I used Win. 209’s. I shot the first three shots with this load. The next two were with 73 gr. of H-4198 (Fed. Primers) and the last two shots (all on the same bull) with 73 gr. of IMR-4198 as I wanted to condition the bore for the 300 Accumax’s I was going to shoot next. So, out of 7 shots with the 300 gr. XTP only #3 was somewhat out of the group and not by too much considering three different powder charges/primers. In this case, there was little difference in velocity between the IMR and Hodgedon 4198 powders in either the speed or accuracy department.
In group 2 I used the 300 AccuMax with 73 gr. of IMR 4198. Velocity was 2728 with a 13 fps ES. The group is what it is and could have been influenced by the wind?
#3, same bullet but H-4198. The first two shots measured .180” with #3 slipping out the side? Vel. 2731 fps with a 31 fps ES, Note how close the velocities of the two 4198’s are?
For #4, I went to a duplex I had shot with good results last week…5/66 Clays/H4198 with Win. 209 primers. Note the velocity with this duplex in right in the same range as the singles at 2734 fps with a 18 fps ES. This group held together at .630”.
Next I switched to the Rem/Shilen with the brake.
Two foulers were shot with the only two 200 gr. FTX’s I had in my box and they printed nicely together.
Going back to the 300 gr. XTP with the 7/65 4759/H-4198 load with CCI 209 mag. primers. I have shimmed my plug (internally) for a crush fit on the CCI’s. Now the longer Federals and Winchesters will not allow the bolt to close so I have to use the CCI’s. Note: Even with the crush fit, the cratering around where the firing pin hits, is causing sticking. A second strike releases it. But, I am getting NO blow by and the primers are perfectly clean. Maybe too much pressure is coming back thru the primer and cratering them? Anyway, other than shot #4, which I am pretty sure was wind induced---- (I saw the grass moving pretty good and on shot 5 it was still) was not too bad for that wind plow of a bullet.
Next, I shot the same load at 200 yards with the same POA. Being 1” + at 100, I wanted to see where it fell at 200. As can be seen on the target it was about 4” low. Group not great but vertical was excellent. Looks like the wind but cannot say 100% for sure?
The next load was the 300 gr. SST with the 5/66 duplex used on target #4 with the AccuMax. I still used the same POA as I again wanted to see what the drop was. This time only about 3” low. What was interesting about this group was the impact of shots 1 and 3……..then 2 and 4! Note the velocity of 1 and 3 was 2762 and 2761 while 2 and 4 was 2772 and 2774. Shot #5 was 2746 and it dropped just below the two slower shots? I did not know if this was coincidence or it actually had something to do with the speed?
Lastly I re adjusted my scope to be dead on at 100 (took one minute of elevation out) then added 1 ¾ MOA and shot at the square with the same SST and load as above for the first shot. I then wanted to see where the 73 gr. IMR load would hit? Well shot two spiked to 2817 fps and went low while #3 came down in velocity and hit high?
What is happening here is I am gaining information on loads for the Shilen which only now has 71 shots on it. Much like I have built up a lot of good references for the Brux, the same need to happen for the Shilen. I have yet to try and BE’s or AccuMax’s or Barnes. This gives me “stuff” to think about and develop load for next week!
