Old post i realize, but why not a .280 AI? Basically 7mm Mag performance with Better efficiency. And u dont have to deal With belted cases either. Shoot standard .280 Rem ammo in a pinch as well.
The .280AI will be in my stable one day. :-)

The issue is my action has the magnum bolt face. I know someone with a 280 AI and it is a shooter for sure.

Ronnie... The bolt face is not a problem. I can install a Sako extractor for you so you can run standard bolt face cartridges. The other problem is with the factory feed rails. You will most likely have shells pop out when you open the bolt. Especially the first one with the most spring tension on it. This can also be fix by installing a center feed magazine.. So if you want the 280 AI you can do it..
I love AI cartridges, lots of advantages with them, the only bad thing is you have to fire form them which means you are shooting each cartridge once at standar performance before you get the benefit of being able to reload with better performance.
But I'll take back the above statement, Nosler makes 280 AI brass, loaded ammo and empty brass so the 280 AI is the exception to the norm.

+1x10 on anything 7mm. I also think the 280 AI is one of the besties... or just the 280... 7-06 I built my first AI last yr in 22-250 AI. I am shooting full loads while fire forming lapua brass and I have lost -0- brass and the gun will shoot bugholes while fireforming.

I guess the question is what are you planning on hunting with it and what else is in your arsenal? You have a 300 WSM, so I agree no real reason for a 300 win mag or weatherby. If you are going to be mostly whitetail and mules then the 7mm is great as well as any of the 6.5/257 stuff. The 7stw or the 7 lazzeroni will shoot out your barrel very quickly, I lost my lazzeroni in about 200 shots. The 7 would be a good sheep/goat/ibex rifle as well. If moose, griz, caribou or such I would consider a 338. Can be loaded up to I believe 250 or maybe more and down to 150 for a screamer. A bit much though for whitetail, but a great all around cartridge. If I had to have only one weapon for this continent 338 would be it Brent

Rojo..............you will get it figured out! I also am a 7 rem mag. fan and am looking at the heads of elk, caribou and moose in my house that fell to this cartridge and at ranges of 4 yards to 350 yards. You can't go wrong with it. The .280 AI would be neck and neck but given the fact you have the mag. bolt face, I would stick with the Rem. mag.

I don't know how flat you want it to shoot but I always thought a 35 Whelen or a 358 Win in a bolt action would be cool and would have lots of knock down power. If I didn't already have a BLR 358 and a Ruger 77 in 350 rem mag I would have one.
