.45 Rem/Brux/8x32 NF/Boyd's ProVarmint/Shilen 2oz./modified lead sled
More good results with the 300 gr. Pittman AccuMax today. The temperature started out at 32* with clear skies and no wind. Between Herman, Bill and myself, we had three 1500 watt heaters going and the room………..while not hot, was comfortable for shooting in a sweat shirt! Some interesting “stuff” occurred today with “KEYHOLING”.
To start with I wanted to shoot a few foulers ending with IMR 4198 to condition the bore for the AccuMax’s. BTW, I shot all Fed. 209A’s today and NO wads.
First shot with a 300 SST and 10/60—Clays/H1498 at 2707 hit close to POI. #2 with the same bullet but quite loose was with 73 gr. of H-4198 and I thought it went into the same hole? Vel. Was somewhat lower at 2577. My field of view with the 8x32 NF is small at 100 and I could not see the very top of my target board. I later discovered that it actually hit 34” high just on the paper and thru my frame. In this case, the hole was round! Shot #3 was with 73 gr. of IMR-4198 and it hit right next to shot #1.
Going to the 300 gr. Accumax now with 73 gr. of I-4198 the three shot velocity averaged 2713 fps with a 22 fps ES and a .514” group. This group hit exactly in the same spot as the .220” group last week. If you look at the picture you can see the slight tears in the paper around the group. Due to the backing, the first shot ripped the paper and the next two shot only slightly marked the ripped edges. When I pushed the tear together it only showed slight marks from the other two bullets and I had to pen them in so they would show up.
At this time I dialed my scope to be dead on at 100 and moved up to the 300 yard target. I dialed up 3 ½ MOA and was pleased that the first shot was right on the money, #2 slightly lower and to the left and #3 right back into the #1 hole for a .941” three shot group. I was definitely impressed with the bullet/load. Vel. Was 2723 and ES was 18
The other day, Keith indicated some good results with H-322 so I had loaded up ten vials.
The bullet was a 294 gr. (altered to a very flat base) SST and 78 gr. of H-322.
Note: The average velocity for five shots was 2609 and the ES 14.5 EXCELLENT! But…………..Shots #3 and #4 Keyholed! ?
Next, the same bullet with 73 gr. of I-4198. Velocity for five was 2688 with a 26 fps ES, still very good but………………shots 1, 4 and 5 Keyholed.
For the final group I shot the same bullet with 73 gr. of H-4198. Velocity for five shots averaged 2701 with a 13 fps ES …Again, very good but……………….Shots 3 and 5 Keyholed.??
So why are some wanting to shoot to the POI and other keyholing? All bullet sized three times each thru the same die setting. All bullets fit with one hand seating though you could feel them going down. What if anything would a wad do? I am already getting low ES’s so pressure must be pretty equal. A wad generally is used to help seal the bullet, not make it obdurate? These bullets have never keyholed with my duplex loads with Winchester primers but now single powder loads with the hotter 209A primer and I am getting intermittent keyholing. I understand that Kyle’s bullets have a thinner jacket than the Hornady’s and that is probably why they are working with single powder loads.
I think I am going to put maybe five gr. of Clays under about 68 gr. of H-4198 and see if the keyholing goes away? If I had an unlimited supply of Kyle’s bullets, that would solve my problem!
Another observation is how much slower H-322 is than H or I 4198. 78 gr. of H-322 with the same bullet is much slower than 73 gr. of 4198.
