I may finally have a chance to get my new Apex with Jeff's HIS conversion to the range soon and wanted to try some 250 TEZ's sabotless (no wad) using 4759 as a single powder while I'm there.
However, I've been having some trouble locating specific load data for this combo and want to make sure I remain within safety margins.
I'm thinking that by not using a wad I may have to run on the hot side to get the bullet to obturate.
I've read some posts that suggest possibly 35g - 43g of 4759 for 250 sabotless bullets with the Apex.
Does this range sound about right to you guys?
Appreciate any input you might have.
Thanks,
YB

I would keep it under 43gr of straight load of SR4759. I've used that same amount in my break open with Douglas barrel using a 250FTX. I think you'd be running in the 35K psi range which should be safe. Those Barnes bullets need a pretty good bump to obturate.

Jeff's system tends to ignite 4198 similarly to a duplex with a 209 primer. Since you are using Jeff's system, I would try a straight charge beginning at 60gr of 4198. You might be surprised with the results. I also think you should use a wool wad or veggie. I just don't like shooting 4759 as a single due to the huge spike early on and less velocity than 4198.

I am setting up a buddy's encore with a bergarra barrel that I had Jeff plug and so far I have shot 275 be's with 55grains of i4198 with good results gonna take powder up from there. One hand loading pressure gonna check speed next outing.

Thanks for the replies guys. Sorry for the late response (past couple of days have been hectic around here).
My reason for wanting to try the 4759 with the 250 TEZ's is that I've only got 7 TEZ's (which buckstuds was kind enough to send me) to try while I'll be at the range working up 200g saboted loads with N-110. I don't have any of the 4198 powders on hand, but I have quite a bit of 4759 so wanted to try that.

Has anyone tested the speed of 60 and or 65 grains of IMR 4198 with a 250 or 275 BE in a 24 to 26 inch barrel? Pressures look acceptable for a break action. I've shot 60 grains and a 250 BE and the recoil is very manageable.

I've shot 65gr of IMR4198 out of my break open w/Douglas barrel with a 275be. That was about as stout as I wanted to go. Sorry don't have a chrono as yet. I can tell you this a 275BE seems to generate less recoil than say a Hornady 250ftx with same amt. of powder. Probably jacket thickness. For factory barrels such as Apex I'd limit the charges to 60gr of 4198.
