Got to the range this morning to try and figure this new gun out. For whatever reason this gun does not like 78 grains of imr or hodgen 4198. I tried three loads today with 76 grains shooting the best today. I am still getting use to a 1 1/2 lb trigger.

Looking like your getting it lined out pretty good. What bullets were used?

there is a muzzleloader builder close to my house that recommends 73 grains of 4198. Luckily my gun like 78 grains, and I have not had to try any other loads.

They will ALL differ to some extent. Work up and down from thet load in 1GN increments tosee which ine shoots the best. Then tweak in 1/2 GN increments to get the best of the best. Then try iw ith another powder. Imr or H 4198 may give dfferent results. Drop

When I shot single powder loads my Rem-Brux liked 73 gns of H4198 with the 275gn bullets and 70gns with the 290-300 gn ones....Black Magic is a shooter for sure Zen

If 76gn of H4198 shots like that I'll take it every time. You aren't losing anything practical and it shoots way better.

Each gun is an individual just like we are, most like slightly different stuff to shoot their best, it's our job to find out what they like.

I found that mine shoots the best with 75gr imr 4198 & 275gr accumax! It shoots great with 78gr but I can squeak out a little better group with 75gr

Lyman...............try shooting the loads that did not look as good on another day and see if it corroborates your first finding? You always have to take into consideration The Shooter, The Wind, The Mirage etc. I would definitely not hang my hat on the first shooting of a load. Maybe if you shot four shots, the fourth one would have come back into the two that were together? Nothing wrong with those groups!

All those will work just fine. The 76 grain load looks just right!

Scott.......I would agree but, that one group "might" be a FLUKE? And, one of the larger ones might also be a reverse FLUKE? You kind of never know until you find a pattern. I would guarantee that the best load you have will not shoot the same size group every time you shoot it? What I look for is whether or not it is close.

I agree Richard. I would want to shoot all three of those groups again in different conditions to see how they perform. I have shot many groups over the years that turned out to be flukes...

Maybe they will shoot better on another day, maybe they won't. I'm betting 75-76gn is where it's at since neither brand of 4198 produced with that bullet at 78gn while 77gn did a little better but 76gn is twice as good. Shooting 76gn again to validate is a good idea and if it shoots stick there. You may lose 60fps over 78gn but who cares. Plus, if it is more tolerant of charge at 75-76gn that is where I want to be. I don't like operating at the top or bottom of a node.
My gun was like that with IMR3031 and the 344gn BOMB: 80gn sucked bad, 80gn sucked less, 90gn sucked even less, then 95gn produced little bugholes. Usually does still. I can take that load to 100gn but why? I just poured out my 100gn loads when I got home that day.
