I will have a new build here soon and am thinking about scopes. I am interested in the nightforce shv 4-14x56 and Leupold VX6 3-18x50. Any opinions on how these two compare optically or anything else? Thanks.

We compared a couple Nightforce and VX6 at dark at the last KY challenge. The VX6 was very close to the Nightforce and I am not a Leupold fan but I was impressed.

Was it the shv or nxs? I have heard from some they are the same glass and others say the shv is not quite as good as the nxs. I have no idea because i have never looked through either. I am kind of leaning towards the vx6 because it is lighter, a little smaller, and i get a somewhat better zoom range but i want to give the nightforce some consideration.

It was the NXS and ATACR. I don't think you would go wrong with either. Go with the one that fits your eye the best.

SHV and NXS have the same glass. The big differences (and cost) are the erector, adjustments, and zero stop. Since everyone keeps asking about them I have one coming for testing when they get back from the show in Germany.

I'm a very objective guy but I have a pretty good idea how this is going to turn out based on having quite a lot of experience with NF optics since the mid 90s. I'm betting it's a great sight that is essentially an NXS without all the stuff most of us don't need but I'll fill you in once I run it through the ringer.

My VX-6 has been good so far, can't speak for the SHV but I don't think you could go wrong with either.

Well I had two customers use the Leupold 3x18x50 Ill rect. One guy bought two the first one was one a M/L I built him last year that he used to kill a big 10pt in Iowa this season and right after that the outfitter bought that gun from him so I had to build him another one.
At any rate the last two Leupold 3x18x50 have had problems from simple things like the cheap rubber scope caps both rubber strings snapped off and on both scopes the (L) on the side of the cap. Both blew off after only a few shots. And the worse thing of all is one scope had a piece of dirt floating around inside it. It would usually land on the upper left side above the recital it looks to be about half the size of the last hash mark on the bottom wire. Needless to say the customer was pissed. Optic's wise I have compared them against other Leupolds many Bushnells, Weavers and with Burris 3x15x50 Veracity FFP, The Burris Veracity scope costs 1/2 the money and the optics were every bit as good as the Leupold. Also the Burris did not need near the fine tuning on the parallax at different distances. It is also a FFP scope the Leupold is not. So far the Leupold has held point of impact it's just disappointing to see the lack of quality in a $1,200.00 plus scope. The Leupold is quite a bit lighter than a Nighforce SHV but for the money I would buy a Nighforce over the Leupold.
I used to use Bushnell scopes and gave up on those even the 6500 Elite was not nearly as good as the new Burris Veracity. Another good scope people seem to over look is the Trijicon 4x16x50 they make a very good scope you can find these with a ill rect for around $800.00
These muzzleloaders are scope killers you need to buy the best scope you can afford and the best tactical style rings (4) screws on a cap is the minimum you should use (6) is better.

Elkman my buddy is a dealer and the Trijicon rep dropped off a scope for him to test a couple years back and it might have just been this particular scope but when we tested it a dusk beside other scopes @ 50 yds on the eye chart I was less than impressed with the quality of the glass, so was he. like I said maybe a bad scope of many, I have never looked through another, maybe they have got it right on the new models.
my VX-6 might puke on the next outing but so far it's been flawless. the new Burris scopes are impressive for sure but It would be hard not buy a Sightron SIII for my next scope, very impressive for the dollar and I've read 0 bad about any of them..

I use and love both of my Sightron 8x32x56 benchrest scopes. I use both of these on my 1000 yard comp guns I also have a 12x42x56 Night Force the optics in both are equal and so far the Sightron has tracked and held point of impact perfectly. The Night force is to heavy to make weight with in the 17lb class. You need a really light stock and a shorter thinner barrel so a lot of shooters are going to the Sightron because of this reason. I have not used a Sightron hunting scope so I can't say how good they are!
I was a big Leupold supporter for many years but I have had to many failures with them. Long range benchrest is dominated by Night Force then March and some Sightron's and Leopold's that's how it is. The sport used to be all Unertl scopes 20 years ago because back then you could not get a internally adjustable scope with enough elevation and that tracked reliably.
You can get a clunker in any brand scope you buy, But there is no excuse for having a piece of dirt floating around in Leopold's flagship scope!

I too have had more failures on Leupold than any other scope and you are correct, no excuse for floaters inside the scope. they do however stand behind their product, I will give them that, hopefully I will not get the opportunity to test the warranty.

I went to a retailer and looked at the SHV this past Saturday. I was impressed I have never owned a Nightforce but I really like this scope. It's probable going to go the gun I am currently putting together.

Looking at the eye relief on the nightforce throws it out i think. I like just a little more.
