Got some time today to do some more fine tuning at the range. Just two 3 shot groups at 100 and 200. A bunch of people were hogging the long range area so I had to settle for this. Next go round will be 300 and 400. I was told by my smith to limit each round to 3 shots. It wasn't that warm today but I stuck to his advise. Matter of fact the day was picture perfect. I was pleasantly pleased with the bolt gun but my break open was giving me a hard way to go today and never did figure out why. That will be included in the next range excursion. On a sidebar I still feel the Otis Ear Shields are superior to the electronic Howard Leights. I do agree with Richard and others about cranking off more shots and have read a lot to that end. As I stated next time its 300 to 400 and there will be 5+ groups. Steve

Steve, Ive never shot any of those 275 BE through my 45 but seems every one who does have excellent groups with them. I haven't shot too many different bullets, mostly parkers and Hornadys but those 275BE's just flat out shoot. Maybe because of the very thin jacket they have. Both of my guns, the bolt and break open, love 'em. I think the Parker has a jacket of .018 but I could be wrong. His website states .015 I suspect Kyle's bullet are in this category also as his jacket thickness is .021.

So you want a RAVE review? OK, Excellent shooting Steve! I know I get my balls busted about shooting five shot groups but when you play with the big boys, you have to shoot five or you get a DNQ! But seriously, have you ever shot just three shots and had a two and one group, then decided to shoot another just for S__ts and giggles and it went back into the two shot cluster? I have shot lots and lots of ML and CF groups and it is not always the first three that go into a group? Many times its shots 2,3 and 4 or 3, 4 and 5? Plus you get so much more information concerning velocity and ES's when you shoot more than three shots. It also tells a lot more about the ability of the shooter. I also like the fact that your targets are very clean and clear and there is no guess work in what you are showing. Hope you make it to Kentucky!

Richard, I usually shoot 5 shot groups. I'm also an advocate of 5 shot groups but was asked by my gunsmith to do some 3 shot groups. As I respect his judgment I complied. Actually I think 10 shots over a cpl hours would be even better.
Next time at the range I'm gonna try and get to the 300 to 600 yard range and just for you I'll post some 5-10 shot groups. I don't have a chrono as yet so all the ES stuff will not be available on my part.
I've never busted anyone's balls for shooting 5 shot groups.

Actually I think 10 shots over a cpl hours would be even better. It would be. Or over days since guys love to advocate that leaving them loaded is a non-issue. And because of how they load. There are no fixed chambers with seating depths, neck tensions, etc that serve as control measures. The weak link is loading consistency. Groups are subjective depending on who runs the test. You can attribute poor groups to any number of things like big ES and SD. I've seen loads with horrible MV deviation shoot great groups even at 600m (load IMR4064 and a 190gn bullet in a .308 take it over a chrony and shoot a target at 500yds then tell me how imprudent those ES/SD numbers are). This goes back to my argument that the shooting disciplines have different needs. What a BR dude needs and wants is different than what a guy who who shoots a practical rifle discipline needs. Everyone has there niche and very few rule in every discipline. Knowing your environment is the first imperative. SML is wholly different as the only time anyone shoots multiple shots is at the range. With an SML a lot of your MV deviation comes down to consistent seating pressure which is in direct proportion to bullet fit and it's why you see a lot of guys struggle to shoot good groups. It is also a discipline where your first shot is your best and possibly only opportunity. Tell me if your first round loads differently than subsequent rounds either with a clean barrel or one that has week to month old fouling. How does that translate to your bullet sizing and why is this still an issue? What effect does this have on your groups, MV deviation, your accuracy, etc? Once you learn how to properly load these guns a lot of the small details come together easily and the guns are tolerant of deviation because we lack some of the variables (called controls earlier as they relate to metallic ) in an SML.
