WGK and I made a range trip last week for testing various things. My objective was further single testing with the Savage centerfire conversion I completed recently. It has a Pac-Nor 25" 45 cal barrel that I repurposed for a heavy duty ML to carry occasionally or a loaner. My goal is to shoot singles in this gun so I have made a few changes over what I usually run. The primer is inserted as deeply into the primer pocket of the Savage 209 BP as feasible (.225") and has a slight crush into a shelf. It has a .040" bushing, standard 5/32 flame channel, and was recently tested in sub-zero conditions for reliability. I know that Richard has been trying singles and recently bumped up to a .035" bushing with better results but maybe not what he was looking for? Well, anyway, I tried the 78gr load of IMR4198 with a wool wad and 250 FTX projectiles smooth sized to load with 1 hand 10-20 pound loading pressure. After zeroing the gun, the first 3 shot 120 yard group was .70" and the velocities were 2825, 2824 and 2837 with an es of 13. There were no bulged primers but I know the pressure at the primer is just right because the primer was slightly flattened but still had rounded edges and the firing pin strikes were not cratered. It looks like a well tuned centerfire primer. I am pleased with the results thus far and have a good feeling that the 28" Brux I am building will get closer to the 3k fps target with similar loads.

You might could bump it up another hundred fps with a two hand loading sized bullet...But who cares.. .70" at 120yds with sst's is real good..Way to Go.....

That is some good shooting! I didn't think the 250FTX's would hold up to that speed and load. Guess so.

They hold up well for paper punching but for hunting they have similar INTERNAL ballistics to the 275BE. I wanted something cheap for zeroing and testing singles reliability in this gun so I had them on the shelf collecting dust. This gun is for hunting and the hunting load will likely be a 275/300 Accumax or 300 Bomb.
