I posted the start of this build on Dougs back last summer when I started this project. I am now finished and thought I would post it on here also.
I wanted to build a CF action SML for quite some time now but didn't want to use modules or modified cases to ignite to charge. I love the ease of the 209, they ignite well so it was time to come up with a easy way to modify a Remington CF to use the 209 primers. I thought of a lot of different ways to do this but I want a cost effective method that uses the original firing pin. So what I came up with is to trim off the case seat of the bolt nose to provide a flat surface to bore a .500 dia. x .500 deep pocket into the bolt, then turn up a bushing with a 209 pocket cut into it. Clock and press the bushing into the bolt face. So here is the perfectly fine, unsuspecting 22-250 donor rifle. (it came with an organ donor card so.....)
I wished I would have taken some pics of the barrel work and the process of Cerakoteing the barrel but oh well. The Krieger .390x.400 finished at 26.5 in. I put a 20 degree crown in the end and lapped it. Bored and threaded the barrel for my own breech plug and headspace off the end of the primer nose. My last build I let the nose of the primer float and sealed the sides with a slight press fit, But on this one since there are no camming screw to wear out like the 700ML action I wanted to try it differently. If it don't work out I can always throw the BP from the ML action into the CF action because they are designed to be interchangeable. Built both a full form die and a smooth die. I wanted also this time to try grouping with just land riding to see if I can get my custom coppers to group like the FF do. This was my first attempt at Cerakoteing anything but I followed the directions to a T and it came out fine. The only left is a little touch up work on the stock and I got a Timney trigger coming for it and will install that when it gets here. Hopefully will be shooting this rifle within the week.
