With the break in the cold, I decided to give my new HIS converted Apex 45-70 a go at sabot less. I had some .452 250 gr XTP's lying around so I figured I'd use them to test things out. I smooth formed them using my Swinglock die. Bullets were tight going in but easier as they approached the load and sat nicely with a bit of pressure. Started out with N110/ H4198 10/50. First off, that load had a bit of a kick out of the Apex. 75 yd groups were 4-5 inches. Went to a 50 grain straight H4198 and wasn't as much of a kick but groups were again 4-5 inches. I tried some veggie wads and it didn't seem to make much a difference. I had some vials of 56 gr H4198 measured out and tried those next. Again, inconsistent group. I was thinking of trying 5 grains of N110 with 50 gr H4198 and gradually go up on the H4198 and see what happens. Any suggestions?? On a side note, I really liked the HIS module system, no blowback and went off everytime. BTW, I'm using Federal LMRP in the modules. Thanks guys.

Have you shot any with sabots? If yes, how were those groups? That bullet and powder combo should shoot lights out for you. 4-5 inch groups at 75 yards would make me look at my mount/rings to see if they are loose. I'd try another scope if the first idea didn't pan out. You have something going on for sure. Good luck,
Don

I'd bump it up to 60gr of straight H4198 with a fairly tight fit and see what happens.

Thanks Don, I will try some saboted loads and see how they shoot. The scope is a brand new Leupold VX 3 2.5-8 that I just mounted. I'll check the scope mount as well

My apex shot 275be with one hand loading, maybe even 2 fingers down with 2 hands to pack the charge. Lrp in modules. 55 grains of I4198. Shot 1 inch groups all day. Check my post, I shot 2 deer with that setup. It seemed to kick off of a lead sled, but shooting deer it was a dream.

I would try that same load with a softer bullet.. The XTP's are kinda hard,,, try a BE and an Accumax... If they don't shoot them problems lie somewhere else... Maybe then look at scope and mounts like Don said,, hopefully that will take care of the problem..

Thanks guys, will try again with different bullets I have some 300 gr BE. Would you go with the same powder weights of H4198?

With the 300 grainers I'd drop off a few grains to start with.

My H&R break open was doing something similar and it turned out the scope base screws had come loose. Took it all apart and remounted everything by the book. Also, and this is just me, I wouldn't shoot anything over a 275gr bullet, preferable the Parker or Accumax in a break open with stock barrel. I've haven't shot Kyle's bullets yet but my gun loved those Parkers so I'm sure your's would love those or Kyle's bullets. His are a smidgeon more expensive but I bet they'd shoot good, testimonials have shown that. Nothing wrong with the sabots tho. Just remember in the smokeless realm less is more
