No sheet today and only one picture……………..!
Due to other shooting I wanted to do, the muzzle loader only had a few shots put down range yesterday. Since I had gotten lucky and won a gun from the NRA Wall of guns raffle at our club I wanted to play with the new Kimber Micro Carry .380. I also had some match loads for my 6mm BRX I wanted to shoot.
So, 35*, sunny, warming up into the 50’s with some light breeze coming as the morning progressed.
Last week I had noted that upon checking I found my bolt had .008” of horizontal end play. In other words, the bolt nose was .008” from touching the nose of the BP so, I corrected this by shimming “out” the BP with a custom made shim. Hoping that deeper primer engagement would eliminate the sticking Fed. And CCI mag primers. NOT!
So, starting out with a 275 gr. bullet with a .060 veggie wad and a 7/65 –4759/4198 duplex I fired the first shot out of a clean barrel. Shot #1 was 2752 using a Fed. 209A primer and it stuck! #2 using a CCI primer was 2719 and it did NOT stick? #3 again with a CCI @ 2705 and it stuck!. Shot #4 with a Winchester 209 and no sticking with the exact same velocity of 2705 fps. #5 with a Win. at 2724 did not stick.
If in fact the sticking Fed. And CCI primers are being caused by the nose of the primer not bottoming out then the primer pocket on these plugs are too deep. How I found this out today was by putting a very small thin (.017”) washer in the bottom of the primer pocket. Screwed in the BP (with the gun –muzzle down) the inserted the bolt with a Win. 209 primer and closed it. Upon opening, I unscrewed the BO and the washer fell out. No sign that it had been crushed or even marked by the nose of the primer contacting it? Further research will reveal just how much space is under the nose of the primer. As has been pointed out, the reason the Win. 209’s do not stick is they have a slightly larger shoulder which holds them in (apparently)
Moving on…………The next five shot group was with a 294 gr. SST (shaved the base flat on the milling machine) NOTE: Hornady bullets marked only 300 gr. SST ML will have bases on them with a very pronounce roundness to them. Bullets with the big logs that say: FTX----300 gr. SST ML will have a decidedly flat base.. I had gotten 250 of rounded ones from Weidners and have been cutting off most of the roundness and hence the 294 gr. resulted. Any future purchases I will specify “FTX!” The rounded bases do not shoot terrible, just not as good IMHO as the more flat base.
So here I used the 10/60 Clays/H-4198 duplex with wad and Win. primers. Vel. Av. 2660 with a 30 fps ES and a five shot group at 1.6 with 3 in .754”
The last group was the Pittman 300 gr. Accu-Max powered by the 10/60 –Clays/H-4198 duplex with .0600” veggie wad and Win. 209 primers. Three shot vel. Averaged 2640 with a 26 fps ES and a .445” group. Not the best group people have probably shot with them but none the less respectable. You done good Kyle!
Sometimes we just need to search a bit for what load they need to shoot.
