Had a 1:30 dentist appt yesterday to get prepped for 3 crowns, all right next to each other. All molars on the bottom right side. Dentist gave me a full dose of of novacane way back in the hinge of my jaw. 10 minutes later I still wasn't even tingling..no less numb. Out comes the second needle. 10 minutes later a little more numb but not "ready". 3rd needle used directly under the teeth to be worked on. That did the trick. 20-25 minutes of drilling and grinding and another 1/2 hour of taking all sorts of impressions. Put temporaries on and went home. By about 6:00 it started feeling like I dislocated my jaw. throbbing pain, headache and drooling like crazy. Could hardly open my mouth and didn't eat supper. (I did make my wife and son roasted venison back strap though...leftovers in fridge) The wife has serious neck issues and has Hydrocodone which she rarely takes unless absolutely necessary. I have never taken a pain pill in my life other than ibuprofen or tylonol and have always been afraid of them. I was desparate!! I took 2 ibuprofen and 1 of her pills and went to bed with a towel on my pillow at 8:30. Had the best night sleep ever and woke up bright eyed and bushy tailed with no pain. Now gotta wait 3-4 weeks for the real ones to come in.

I was like you, big strong tough it out....hell with that these days, that's what modern medical science is for. Kinda like a duplex....you fight it till ya try it...

I have had crown work due to an automobile collision years ago. Certainly needed but you could have bought a new rifle for what it will cost. You can get along better without the rifle however

Reminds me somewhat of my wisdom tooth extraction (all of them at once) in my Army days. Military medical personnel are often looked down upon by the outside medical establishment, but those Army dentists did a great job. None of my teeth were through the gums, but were angled, pushing my other teeth forward. Two dentists worked on me, one being an intern. They shot me up with novacane until I could feel nothing, then ordered me to inform them when I could feel even the slightest pressure, not to wait for ANY pain, and I did so. Then they proceeded with the scalpel, a dental chisel, and a ball peen hammer (I KID YOU NOT), followed by dental extraction tools. They gave me several shots during the process. By the time they got me out of the chair, there was no feeling in my head, but for the very back of the head.
They gave me a bunch of pain medication and sent me on my way......I made the mistake of going back to work. Upon seeing me walk back in the office, a Major told me to get my a__ home. He didn't want to be around me when the pain set in. Well, I opted for a couple liters of Thai Singha beer and never felt any pain. Never did take the meds.
