As some of you may know, I was looking for a new SML to use strictly as close range (<150 yds.) Portable Treestand / Woods gun for use in the Blue Ridge Mtns. of VA. where I hunt. As such, I wanted a gun with the following criteria as that would perfectly suite my needs for the type of hunting I do:
1.) Lightweight / fairly compact
2.) Barrel that had a reputation for being fairly accurate
2.) H.I.S. / Breach Plug
3.) Ramrod attached to gun
4.) Reasonably priced
Well, a couple of months ago I was lucky enough to find a new Apex 45-70 and sent it out to Jeff to work his magic on.
I had him install his BP / H.I.S. system, fabricate a Ramrod mounting system for the gun, as well as shorten the stock / LOP by approx. 1/2".
I received the gun back from him a couple of days ago, and all I can say is WOW ... just WOW! The quality of his work is absolutely superb. And the way he was able to design and fabricate the Ramrod mounting system is, in and of itself, a Testament that he is a true Master at his craft!
I now have the PERFECT SML for my needs, and I couldn't be more pleased, Thank You Jeff! In keeping with theme of folks here naming their guns, I Dubbed my new baby "The Woods Assassin" as I thought it would be fitting for its intended purpose.

Yankee Bill Glad to see some pics of this Apex ramrod mod....are the T/C ramrod holders held in place with set screws? how about Hanks barrelband? set screws? Is the barrel tapped for the barrel band?
Then I am assuming the forearm is held in place with shorter screws.
Yes. The Apex is a great carry/woods gun!!!

Jeff's barrel band looks real nice on that Apex, heck the whole rifle looks great.

Very nice, I sense your excitement. Hope it shoots great!
Wish I could find an Apex with 45/70 barrel. Don't understand why they are in such short supply. Maybe CVA doesn't produce many?

The ramrod fit is slick on that gun. I think you have a great woods rifle there no doubt!!!

Glad to see you got the rifle and all looks good..
For you guys that might want to do the same thing remember this.. The location of the lug and hing pin dictates how long the ram rod can be.. With the longest rod possible installed on the gun the minimum powder charge is 55 grains of IMR 4198 or the rod is too short to completely seat the bullet.. If you wanted to shoot lesser loads you can always go to IMR 3031 or other slower powders. This will require more powder to achieve the same velocity, therefor making the powder stack taller..

Looks good YB! I wouldn't have thought I would like the barrel band on the Apex but it looks really nice and clean.

SC, I was very apprehensive to go with a barrel band also as I can't say that I've seen one before that I thought looked very nice on a break open SML. But due to the design of the Apex Jeff felt this was the best option if I wanted an attached ramrod. And seeing as how this gun will be a tool for a specific application I decided to just go with the band. I really thought I would not like the looks of it as much as I do, but then again I may be just a little bias
