critter wants to know if any one has used a Remington 783 for a base for a SML. Just wondering since it has a decent action and trigger. Would like some feedback on the good bad and the ugly of using the 783 for a baseline for a SML. Thanks Critter

Just did a search. That sure does remind me of my Marlin X7!! The barrel nut on the X7 can be removed with the Savage wrench and a Savage barrel will fit the X7. If they kept the nut and threads the same as the X7 (since Remmy owns Marlin), your only worry would be how to fit the bolt head for use with a 209 primer or use one of Jeff's systems. www.remington.com/rifles/bolt-action/model-783/model-783-scoped

I was thinking the same that the barrel nut design is similar to Savage. I have seen the 783 a while back on sale for $225.

Here's your answer Critter!: www.savageshooters.com/showthread.php?31687-Rem-783-and-Savage-barrelNotice what "northlander" has to say in that thread. Jim Briggs knows his stuff when it comes to conversions. Unfortunately, Criterion does not make 45 caliber barrels. However, it would take very little machine work on a Savage replacement barrel to correctly fit a 783. Notice what "Skunce" has to say in reply #7. Now, ya got me thinkin', like I NEED another conversion!
