I ordered a Rock Creek contoured blank yesterday for my next muzzleloader build. I have been hearing rumblings about them being fine barrels and "I thought" I had two friends that were using them. Turns out they both had problems finding the barrels in stock, didn't want to wait and went with Brux. My last barrel was a Bartlein and the one before that a Benchmark and they were both top notch... not that I have had much dissapointment with any of the barrels I have used. I fully expect more of the same with the Rock, just wanted to up my anticipation with a little banter while I wait for delivery.
Does anybody on here have any personal insight on these barrels? I am not worried about it so much as I am just curious if others have used them. So far they have been the best customer service I have found as of late. Seems some barrel manufacturers must be busy enough not to need one at a time customers?

I know the M24 started out with Rock barrels but I don't know that I ever had one. They are supposed to be really good. I have a Benchmark 5R that is an absolute hammer and just got a couple of 6.5 5R barrels done up on Krieger blanks. I think Benchmark is one of the best buys in barrels. The only issue I have ever had with 5R barrels is with light, short bearing surface bullets. With long bearing surface bullets they have worked wonderfully. Just something to consider when choosing bullets. Not saying it is gospel as it was just one barrel but I have heard of the same issue from others.

I could see that on the 5R especially if you were running higher velocity/pressure loads with low bearing surface bullets. I had never heard of that but they claim the bearing surface is minimized or sumpin... I read it but truthfully didn't try to understand what the big gain was on the 5R beyond seeing the lands had angled edges vs straight.

As a secondary question. Why are there so many barrel makers in Wisconsin? Is there any basis for this?

Because the eastern US is/was the steel manufacturing capital years ago. Lots of lost talent and skill in those parts..
