Took advantage of our heat wave here in northern Illinois to visit the range. Had the place all to myself on a cold, dreary, slightly windy raw day. Look at the crowd on the firing line lol: Here is my temporary cheek-piece (relatively firm grade of closed cell foam) to provide a cheek weld where I need it on my face; under my cheek-bone instead of on my lower jaw: Felt much more comfortable to have a consistent location to rest my cheek bone to maintain proper alignment of my eye to the scope. Was able to relax my jaw and shoot with my mouth slightly ope, can't do this with the standard stock. Only problem with my temporary cheek piece is bolt extraction and cleaning rod insertion from the breach. Here is a target with five 3-shot groups made at 200 yards with 275 MH in front of 78gr IMR4198. I'm extremely pleased with how accurate and consistent the rifle shoots. I need to make a decision on what I'm going to do to make a permanent fix. I'm leaning toward sending the rifle back to Jeff and having him re-bed it to one of the Manners stock models that are equipped with an adjustable comb. I read that the Manners adjustable combs have one inch of vertical travel and the comb can be easily removed and replaced for barrel cleaning without effecting the specific adjustment that I've set for myself. Can anyone confirm this to be fact? What Manners stock models can I choose from that have a forearm wide enough to accept my rifles #17 Brux barrel (1.3" - .783" at muzzle).

Most of their stocks will accept a large barrel. T4A would be a good choice, kind of pricey but a really nice stock. I'm thinking about one myself..

Mike you probably already know but you can get the Boyds with adjustable comb in the same color laminate you have now. I think it was about $215.

Mike, off topic a bit but what brand are the bags and front shooting rest you have in the picture? Not to hijack Mikes thread but his front rest looks to be a Sinclair international A/P model.... And the bags look to be Edgewood.... I have the same rest and bags and they are awesome. Nice setup Mike.

Good shooting. Any of the Tactical stocks and the EH1-A will take your barrel. The KMW hardware is excellent and can be returnes to height via a C-clip. I'll measure how much travel for you when I finish up some bullets before bed; this gig is wearing me out.

You can probably get 1" out of them but I just measured mine and at the highest setting you can get the C-Clip to work you gain .700". I had mine higher than that at one point but it slipped to the C-Clip so I just left it there. That is the setting I use with a 50mm objective in Seekins 34mm/.820" rings and while not exactly perfect (as in prone where if I am just resting on the gun like I'm napping I get a tiny amount of shadow) is close enough to allow for a solid and repeatable cheek-weld.

Mike.. That's some very nice shooting... As for stocks, if you want manners and like the thumb hole style you can do the T5-A for a tactical look or the EH5A form more of a hunting style. Either of these will work for you.

I seem to recall Jeff telling me, prior to placing my rifle order, that the Manners T4 model will accommodate the Brux barrel. And yes, Manners stocks are VERY pricey, but I have heard and read nothing but good things about them as well as Manners' outstanding customer service. I like the price point of the Boyds Pro Varmint with adjustable comb, but it only has 1/2" of vertical adjustment and the last thing I want to do is replace the stock and still have a problem! It's just too bad there was no way for me to know in advance how the rifle/stock/scope system was going to fit to my anatomy, specifically my cheek weld and eye/scope alignment. I just think it's best that I replace the stock with an adjustable stock so I can make it fit me better. Just going to have to save my pennies to buy the Manners....lots of pennies. lol

Yes, I really like the price point of the adjustable Pro Varmint and being able to stay with the very attractive Forest camo laminated wood, but I'm concerned about the maximum 1/2" vertical comb height adjustment. I'm too scared to gamble with this alternative and find out that it too doesn't work for me. I just want to replace the stock ONE time. lol

Mike, off topic a bit but what brand are the bags and front shooting rest you have in the picture? Hey doc12, as deadeyedon89 pointed out, it is a Sinclair rest with Edgewood bag accessories. I have the adjustable forearm design because I shoot so many different rifles, but it is available with a traditional fixed bench rest forearm design as well. Good quality, efficient design, very nice windage with course and fine elevation adjustment and ROCK SOLID. Weighs about 35 pounds so you will get a work-out carrying this thing around. However, its weight will be compensated for by making your wallet a bit lighter. lol

Complete with matching elbow bag and all! Nice set up Mike and great targets. Thanks Richard. Yea, gotta have the elbow bag to protect my dainty little tender elbow........... FROM SCRAPING ACROSS THE CONCRETE SHOOTING TABLE WHEN TOUCHING OFF THE "LAND CANNON" (As deadeyedon89 calls it. lol). And additionally, can't forget, the elbow bag makes me look like I know what I'm doing and as others here have said about the extended length scope sun-shades, it significantly adds to the "cool factor". lol

Thank you, Keith, for taking the time to provide some detailed information. OK, so not quite the 1" they advertise, but better than the 1/2" advertised by Boyds for their adjustable comb hardware. I equipped my rifle with a Badger 20MOA rail, Badger Max-50 34mm/1.0" high rings (their lowest) and Leupold VX-6 4-24x52. When all is said and done, the gap between the scope's objective bell and rifle's barrel is 140". Can't really expect to get it any lower than this. And another issue (scope to barrel clearance) that is very difficult to know in advance of ordering what one thinks will be correct and actually mounting everything up.

Either of these will work for you. Thank you for the recommendations, Jeff. I remember you telling me the thumbhole stock design helps mitigate some recoil. And because I choose to never again own a rifle with a muzzle-brake combined with the good wallop from this SPML-45, the adjustable comb thumbhole stock design may be the best choice. After 75 rounds down the barrel I'm honestly not effected by the rifle's recoil, completely tolerable to me. So, the rifle fit/cheek weld is the absolute critical issue in my opinion. Once again, so hard to decide without the ability to actually mount different stock models to feel exactly how they fit me. For the price of the Manners, I should drive to their facility to fit the best model. lol

Not to sound repetitive, but that is awesome shooting!
I'd be happy with it at 100 yds, much less 200!
And, cheek piece aside, a great looking gun!
