I've noticed in a lot of the rifle photos posted that many of the scopes are equipped with extended lens shades. What is the purpose of these shades and what is the benefit to the shooter?

the only reason I do the extended sunshades is to help keep rain, snow etc off the lens mainly while hunting in the elements,i leave them on also during bench sessions to just keep to everything the same~looks cooler too imo, fwiw

I feel that it keeps the reflection off the the glass that could be seen from what I am hunting...I use butler flip ups also and keep the objective covered until needed....

They are called "sunshades" their intended purpose is to block the sun from shining directly on your objective lens causing a glare or even worse not being able to see at all.. If your objective lens has any dust on it for what ever reason then the sun light shining on it would make it practically impossible to see through. I use mine all the time even in low light conditions.

Boy did I wish I had them this november.. hunting a box blind out in the marsh, as the sun started peaking up across the marsh I seen 2 silhouettes coming right to me.about ten minutes went by and by this time the sun was fully up glaring across the marsh pretty good, It was a doe and a beautiful 150+ inch 10 pt. He finally presented a broadside shot at 162 yards, threw the gun up and looked threw the scope to see nothing but a bright glaze of orange. Put my hat brim over the scope, didn't help. I literally had watch that buck walk away right in front of me and go into the frag. Haven't seen him since. Terrible experience

I use them for the same reasons deadeye mentioned. They mostly work but there are times they do nothing. Shooting on my home range between 9am and 11am is a prime example as it faces just south of east. I also removed mine for this last match since I was walking miles at a time with it over my shoulder, resting on my pack. In general though I leave it on for whatever function it provides and for the aesthetics mostly.
