Trying to keep it legal for my state maybe having to change powders for my CVA Scout 45-70 SML. Has anyone ever worked up a load for these “substitute” powders like black horn, triple 7, Pyrodex? Would love to hear how y’all’s gun did with them. I know 4198 is much better for it just not allowed to use in Ms

My condolences. I used to use T7 in my Encore ML, but I never used it in my Savage. The main thing I remember with the Savage when they were relatively new was that traditional black powder substitutes had a nasty habit of siezing the breach plug. If I remember correctly, the recommended "fix" was to use a copper based anti-seize combined with teflon tape, where as the copper based anti-seize alone was sufficient for smokeless powder. Not sure if the same issue exists in the Scout or not.
I've also never used Buckhorn, but I've heard that it gives the best performance of all the BP substitutes.
