I have a CVA scout 45-70 converted to a SML does anyone know if this gun is legal to use on public land in Mississippi? I’ve read the rules a couple times and hard to understand.

From what I can tell. You can use your rifle; you just can't use smokeless powder in it while hunting in Mississippi during the primitive season. Has to be black powder or one of the black powder substitutes. No smokeless powder allowed in muzzleloaders during the primitive season. You should be able to use smokeless in your gun during the regular gun season if you wish.

Yeah that’s kinda how I read it. That sucks to own one and can’t use it in Ms they’re strict about the muzzleloader.

On another note, I can't speak to Mississippi, but in many cases, apps an websites tend to summarize regulations. In some cases you even have to go beyond the booklets that the game commissions publish an get down to the underlying laws to fin the answer. Like in many areas, technology outpaces the legal system.

Pyrodex, T-7, Blackhorn 209 That is what I was referring to. Again, I'm speaking to Mississippi. I know there are states where there is controversy over the interpretation of the law as to whether BH209 is considered an acceptable black powder substitute. I think Pyrodex is a universally accepted black powder substitute.

Many, like me, use the SML in rifle/gun seasons. My guess is that the ‘custom’ level of these converted ML makes them the most accurate rifle in many a man’s safe!

I do not make a module to hold a 209 primer. A percussion cap is exactly that, a percussion cap. This includes a #11 cap, a musket cap, a 209 primer or a rifle primer. What is a 209-shotgun primer, It is just a low grade rifle primer sitting inside a copper/brass or sometimes aluminum cup. I would say if it went to court because you were using a rifle primer instead of a shot gun primer, any good lawyer could get the charges dropped. Now for powders. what is smokeless powder. It is the first black powder substitute. Any state that says "black powder or a black powder substitute, I would say you can use smokeless, however Mississippi says no smokeless powders, so this specifically rules out smokeless and limits you to blackhorn 209, 777 or pyrodex. This is just my opinion and may differ from yours and or the Game Wardens.
