How do I know when/if to change breech plug on Scout V2 with HIS break action ignition. I’m having to clean the face pretty often because the modules wont allow the action to close completely and of course, the hammer wont cock. About 200 shots on this plug. Is this an issue with the modules stretching or the breech plug?

Is there any carbon build up where the nose of the module seats? Will it close on a new module? Make sure the shoulder on the breech plug is clean as well as the area it seats on. The breech plug itself should last indefinitely. Only the bushing will enlarge. But, that would not cause a closing problem. Bushings can be replaced if you have the ability to press them out.

I would pull the plug and pick all the carbon out of the pocket, then give it a good bath.
Richard gave you some good advice.

No, I didnt have this issue in the beginning. It is eother carbon build up or the profile of the modules has changed. Thanks for the replies, Pat

Took plug out and cleaned all carbon off. Still not closing on module well enough to allow cocking the hammer unless I close it pretty hard. I think I will just get some new modules and see how that goes.

Try this, remove the forearm from the bbl, now check to see if it locks and cocks. If it does then re-adjust the forearm lock-up. Just a thought 🤔

As mentioned a forearm check, insure the breech plug is being seated in all the way to the proper fit, (debris, build up or powder preventing proper seating) I had an issue on one that the breech plug was not seated in to its proper clearance, smith removed .002 tho. on the schoulder of the breech plug allowing it to seat deeper and its worked perfectly since, and It would not cock unless you slammed it shut now you can easily close it, I am sure all this has been checked just speaking of issues I have had forearm and all, and a new plug will help, nothing wrong with a spare,

Also check the bolt holding the but stock on the frame. If it is a hair to long the gun will not cock.
Also the most likely problem is the plug is not all the way in the barrel. .002 can keep it from closing all the way and locking up. Clean it real good with break cleaner and re-assemble using very little grease on the breech plug threads.
On an Encore, I have never seen the modules swell up, you would be reaching some high pressures if your modules are swelling. As for the breech plug, I don't think it can swell either, It would crack before it swelled.
