You don’t see this one mentioned. What would safe grounds be with N120 with a 275gr bullet. I know in the bolt guns it was around 3grs under what max charge was for 4198. So my thinkings is 60ish grains with n120 in a scout. Anyone have first hand experience on this? My thinkings is with the steeper pressure curve it may be a better powder kind of like the guys running 4227 in scouts.

We set my sons Scout conversion up using 56 grn of N120 and the 275 grn Fury star tip..we started at 50 grn and stopped at 56 grn because we were running out of daylight..we averaged 2390 fps..one ragged hole at 100 yards and a 3/4 inch cluster at 200 yards..we had a 5 inch drop at 200 yards and we went on to kill 7 deer with this combo from 100 yards to 260 yards with 6 pass throughs with no fragging and on the 7th one the distance was misjudged and he was spined taking out the top half of a vertebrae and found fully expanded in the opposing shoulder..we are loving the 275 Fury at this speed! Now that muzzy season is over we will pick up where we left off at 56 grn of N120 and inch up to 60 grn...we are fortunate that we do summer depredation control and will continue with hair testing..I would like to see 2500 fps with a 275 grn bullet and 2500-2600 fps with a 250 grn bullet..may not make those numbers but will find out..I will not take it past 60 grn of N120..I love N120 and over the years have shot everything from 195 Barnes in a .45 to the 300 grn BO in a .50 using 60 grn of N120..if my memory serves me correctly the N120 was running 50-90-fps faster than H4198...I will have to retest this to verify...

Thanks for the reply. I loaded up 60gr of it but the gun didn’t seem to like it as well as H4198. I was having some sizing issues too so I’m not going to totally count it off. This scout has a choked barrel and I’ve worked on it but it’s got small section I think I’m going to have to work on still yet out towards the crown. Either that or I picked up some heavy fouling right in that section but it was being a bear to load after a handful of shots. So I’m not totally sure what’s going on. The rest of the barrel seems fine after lapping it down a bit it was choked pretty bad or I’m spoiled by a brux tube on a M700 bolt gun.

Discussion about the bad crown and choked barrel right there. It may help you out.

Maybe worth trying out 4227.

This gun is a camo V2 with a fluted barrel and it the end of the day it’s only aesthetics but I can’t allow myself to hack the barrel on it. I’ll get it worked down by lapping it. As for 4227 I’ve kindly looked around in a couple local shops and that one don’t seem to be a common powder here. I would’ve tried it if I came across some.

We are experiencing the same thing...the choked portion on this barrel is terrible..we cleaned the snot out of it but its still extremely difficult to load...I am worried about excessive pressures...we are going to have to lap it no doubt..my son bought this and is regretting it...

I got this one most of the way straightened out but it has a little section I’m going to revisit. I talked to my smith and he told me to use a piece of scotchbrite over a brush and in which I did so then I took a cotton patch I cut from an old shirt and I used polish and hit it all with a fine polish pretty vigorously. I rechecked it and it felt pretty good clean but with some fouling I’m having some issues in that small section.

Isnt scotchbrite pretty thick? What size brush did you use?

Isnt scotchbrite pretty thick? What size brush did you use? I used a 45cal brush. You can peel the sheets of scotchbrite apart and thin it out. Smith even suggested taking a hammer and tapping it out good and flat but I was able to get it spread out thin enough to get it to go in the barrel with the brush. I put some remoil on it and scrubbed and then scrubbed some more. Then checked sizing again, and I thought I was in pretty good shape and polished the bore and cleaned it with acetone then bore solvent then clean patches.
