Does anyone have experience with a 45 cal bolt rifle with a 20" barrel? Stand hunting with my current bolt with a 26" #17 brux barrel is a challenge. Having a shooting stick with me is a must, but a pain in the rear to use while in a lock on or ladder stand.
I will be ordering a light weight barreled action soon and would like to go with the 20" barrel, but I am concerned that the felt muzzle blast to my face may be harsh. The APA fat bastard brake will be used on this rifle. Any experiences with shorter barrels on bolt actions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks for the help!

I have a 17” barrel on my break action and I really like having the shorter barrel for going through the woods and brush. It’s easy to handle in the stand. As far as a break goes I can understand why you would be concerned with the APA Fat Bastard break with the way the ports are designed. I personally would buy a Hanks Precision Gun Parts Self-Timing Tactical Muzzle Brake V2 - 4 port. hanksprecisiongunparts.com/p/self-timing-tactical-muzzle-brake-v2-4-port-dia-0-990-1

How’s the Hanks break compare to the APA with recoil?

You may check out the Cva conversions, I have been more than happy with mine for a stand gun I think they just about ideal. With the break action I bet the overall length would be close or even less than a bolt action gun.

I own an encore with a 27" and a bolt gun with a 28". Big difference between the two for overall length. The Encore is much handier.

How’s the Hanks break compare to the APA with recoil? We have talked about brakes on here before, but I will sum it up quickly. There are a ton of brakes on the market, most of them work pretty good. Some are way over-priced for what you are buying. I've seen brakes cost more than a Brux barrel. Brakes with aggressively angled ports work good but the drawback is all the pressures coming back at you, brakes with straight through slots work just as good without all the pressure in your face or the face of the guy on the bench next to you. My Self-Timing Tactical brake will work as good as any on the market in its perspective size range at about half the cost that others are charging. Just my opinion.

SHORT BARRELS As a topic of discussion. several here have done short barrels with good results, ask those same guys what the key is? I will bet they will tell you finding a powder with the burn rate to match the barrel length and bullet weight is key. Shoot a long barrel load in a short barrel? Yep, you can, but likely fouling will be terrible, it's still burning as it goes out of the muzzle.
as a general rule the shorter the barrel, the faster the powder required..

I have n use a NEF Handi-rifle in a .45. Powders like VV110 & SR4759 work well in mine using .40 bullets 195 gr -200, with a sabot.

Anything wrong with using IMR4198?

That’s what I used for my testing when I was cutting down my barrel one inch at a time. I also test 60 and 65 grains of IMR4198.
