I recently ordered a brux barrell 1.125 for 6 inches then tapers to .750 at 26 inches. The caliber is .408. I am wanting to use a HIS and change the bolt face to use LRPM’s. I will probably put a Ti brake on it. Am I on the right track and what loads would be best for this set up? I’m fairly new to this so any info is greatly appreciated

you need a regular (lugged) action. the ml2 action is not the way to go, my 2cents

I would tend to agree with Dennis. The .40 caliber is a different animal than the .45, it creates pressure much faster, not necessarily the caliber I would pick for a non lugged action ESPECIALLY if you are not experienced already. Not trying to discourage you but just stating facts.
I have had many .40s and while they can be great once you find the right combination they can also make you pull your hair out trying to get there, not a plug and play caliber like the .45. Give us some insights into your thinking and maybe we can be of more help.

The large shank savage “rifle action” thread diameter is 1.120" x 20tpi. Is your barrel threaded for this ? If you ordered it from jeff Hankins then it probably is. The rifle actions have the lugs. I would look for a used savage in WSM (large shank) or a single shot target (large shank) action - a much safer approach.
If you are dead set on using the ML2 I would switch the ignition to (screw in bolts) direct. Google pics of muzzleloaders that have blown up from excessive pressure (some on this site) and you will “see” why we are building off actions with lugs and 1.250” barrels. I still want to build a .40 on an encore action but the 1.0” diameter barrel isn’t worth the risk. As others have stated -the .40 can be picky and pressure builds really fast. PM me with savage questions.

I have 2 savage axis actions I could use and that will open up stock choices. I have been using a friends Hankins encore with good results. Not sure of the load but it seems mild and would like to duplicate this. I order the barrel while in a deer stand and did not have my glasses unfortunately… thought I had ordered 1.255 for 6 inches and was going to use a mesa action but surprise when I opened the box lol. Might as well make the wife one too huh. As far as insights I want to duplicate the encore in performance as it is pushing a pitman 225 @ around 2600 ish I think with IMR 4198 I believe. It is whatever the Hankins load is.. I’m not pouring the powder so going by what I was told by the owner. The barrel is a blank so not threaded.. they sent me the profile Hankins uses… if I had read the dimensions right I would have just bought a profit from him but now I need to duplicate it. Might get in contact and see if he is willing to machine it and install the ignition.
