Hello, my first smokeless build is almost done! It is a mesa precision action, #6 bruxism, 20 twist with HIS plug. Wondering of I should go 275 or 300gr bullet? Also staring point load data for either. I have 3lb OF IMR 4198. Looking to the experts for advice before first outing!
Thanks guys

It really depends on how much recoil you like and or what distance you what to shoot. Both bullets will get the job done.

That’s implied because you posted in the main not the 40-cal specific area, but given the stakes involved and that you’re stated you’re a newbie I just want to check and be 100% sure. Because if a guy uses 45-cal load data in a 40-cal, that can go very badly very quickly. Cheers bud, welcome to the addiction :-).

Mitch- yes it is 45cal, appreciate the check! I was originally leaning 275 but now not sure if I should start with them or the 300s.
I did have a savage ml2 and reload for various rifles, just new to the 45 and higher powered guns.

Barrel length? 4198 will work with either of the 2 bullet weights as has been disclosed. Muzzle brake? If not you might want to stick with the 275 weight range? A decent brake helps with the 300 weight range bullets. with either I would shoot the Pittman 278 or 303 hard core for hunting purposes. I personally prefer the 303s for what I do.

26" barrel and has a brake. I can handle a fair amount of recoil but I know these guns pack a big punch on both ends. Is a good starting point ~70gr 4198 with a 300gr bullet and 73gr with a 275gr bullet?

With my (2) 300 grain Pittman 73 grains N120, and or IMR 4198, with a BRAKE,,,,
