Has IMR4198 been used as a booster, with Varget, in the 40 cal? Lighter loads with 225-250 grain bullets. LRMP

I personally would skip the booster and shoot a straight charge of Varget.

I didn’t, only VV110. This is in a bushing, 209, PN barreled 10ML2. Using HIS or especially DI, would lessen the need of a duplex. If duplexing and using 4198 as the booster powder, I’d use at least 25% more than what I’d use with VV110.

Varget is an amazing powder as tested so far in 275-350 grain bullets -smooth sized. However - I don’t have pressure trace data and some of my loads have exceeded quick loads data for pressure.
Some other facts about varget per my testing. It’s a dirty powder until pushed to its upper limits on pressure. Flat primers yield clean barrels. Your results might be different.
Flat primers are an indicator of pressure so beware.
It may or may not work well with a booster. My results with fast booster powders - have been better with slower powders than varget in the .416 bore which is pretty close to the .40. - but that’s been with bullets over 300 grains. I don’t have a booster/varget combo to recommend but believe if you start low and brush between shots - varget might be a great option for you. If not -please refer to Sew’s combos on the lower weight bullets.
