Anybody use Reloder 17 with 300s? I watched a video on YT where a guy is loading 160gr of it with 300gr Parkers at 3300fps. His gun is a 1.25x5 but is this safe?

Wow, that’s a bunch of powder for only 3300 FPS. That’s 20.625 FPS per grain. Thats only 43 shots per pound.
I personally shoot 104 grains of H4895 with a 325 bullet at 3200 FPS. That’s 30.769 per grain. You can get 67 shots per pound with a whole lot less kick to the shoulder and the wallet.

101.8 with a 350gr XLD give me 2,960fps.

It's all about what your hunting distances might be? This along with the weight (gun) and size of your barrel will dictate your setup.

Oh I get why y'all do it up there in the open country, I don't/can't shoot that far where I hunt. And 160 gr makes my shoulder hurt just thinking about it

I won't ever shoot a load out of my gun before confirming first-hand with a trusted shooter and re-confirming with experts (Jeff, Mark, Toby, Dennis, Steve and etc.).
Out of my 16 pound heavy bolt gun with HIS and 28" Brux, I launch smooth-sized 328 grain Aeromax bullets with 105 grains of 4895 achieving on average 2980 fps. For stepping up to this load I had to have Jeff install a muzzle-break and after shooting a match, my face feels like its been punched hard a few times in the jaw. haha I'm a big guy and can handle it.
While Reloder 17 is a much slower burning powder than we normally use, I would only believe pouring a 160 gain load and touching it off if I saw it with my own eyes.... while standing behind a large tree about 50 yards from the shooter (victim).

I don’t know anyone here using RL-17 in a .45, might be some? Seems awfully inefficient to me Are your goals extreme distance? If so a 325 or 350 might be a better choice.

I use RL17 in my big 45. 136gr of RL17 pushes a 350XLD at 3250fps

I had to go watch the video. I’m still scratching my head wondering if I’ve been using QuickLOAD wrong all this time. Lol

Search smokeless Muzzleloader mach on YouTube or scroll down this thread, I posted the link for someone.

I just watched the video and thanks for posting the link.
With ES of 185 fps I wouldn’t waste my time shooting this load. 4 to 6 inch groups at 300 yards is over MOA.
My goal is always 3/4 MOA or better.

My only experience with RL17 is using it for .25-06 and was pretty temp sensitive, at least in that caliber.

RL17 is just as temp sensitive as any other powder when used way past it’s intended purpose. With 350’s and DI I would see very good ES less than 30fps. With LRMP it would see a higher ES but no noticeable decrease in velocity. Accuracy is as good as any other powder shot from this rifle.
As for Quickloads…The software is intended to simulate cartridge internal ballistics. To get a sim that works with a SML you have to manipulate the variables to effectively remove the case. If anyone needs help with this just give me a call.
