I have a Winchester m70 in 243 wssm and I'm thinking about using it for deer hunting next fall so I'm wondering what the best bullet would be for a heavy bodied deer is ? Also accuracy is very important to me too.

Obviously you will have to try different factory loads or handloads and see what accuracy you can get. If you could just get lucky and have a certain bullet that shot great, it would be hard to go wrong with a Hornady 80 gr GMX or a Barnes 85 gr TTSX. Both like to be shot WAY off the lands. 3300 fps should be easy. Both copper mono's. The Nosler E-tip would probably be in the same league but I have no personal experience with them
A 100 gr Nosler partition would also be good at 3,000 fps easily with handloads. The 85 and 95 gr Partitions would also be very good.
A guy at camp does very well with 85 gr Sierra HP Game Kings and has several dozen deer to his credit with no losses...however almost everyone has been a doe.
A 243 is a very adequate deer rifle for a marksman that places shots with skill. And they are fun to shoot at the bench which makes it easier to shoot well.
Good luck

The coppers are true cleavers and a deer will not stop them. In a 243 they are efficient and go fast, provide good upset from Hydrostatic shock and I challenge anyone to recover one from ANY sized deer. 2 holes...bad news for a deer. I got very good accuracy from the GMX factory loads and so-so with the TTSX BUT...I did not play with them enough and was trying to seat them too close to the rifling when hand loading. Killed a large bodied buck at 80 yds very dead very quickly with a Factory GMX shoulder shot. A few does too. TAR12 over on Doug's has piled up deer at all sorts of ranges with this load.
When I got serious with the 7mm Mag and read a lot of info on Barnes site, I got incredible accuracy with the 120 TTSX seated over 70/1000ths off the lands....they need to "jump". I have a heavy varmint .243 that shoots the factory GMX very well. My 1st hand loads with the TTSX sucked but it was not the fault of the bullet. I had seated them 10-15/1000ths off the lands. Gave up on them and gave my buddy my remaining heads. He ended up putting on a clinic with them in his 6mm Rem.
I acquired the 7mm the next year and it carries much better than my boat anchor 243 bull barreled varmint rig so I never tried them again in the .243. But like Hillbill said, they would be great if you can shoot them with precision. Any of the TTSX's are super bullets that make a deer rifle into an elk rifle.

I never shot a deer with a 243, I figured I'll take a neck shot. What bullet and weight do you guys think will be the most accurate with a 1:10 twist barrel?

I get MOA out to 200 yds in my Rem 700 with 100 gr Sierra Pro Hunters. Anything smaller will stabilize fine.

I probably should have put this in the reload section but what powders do you guys find is the most accurate with big game bullets in a 243 or 243 wsssm ?

For 100 gr bullets it is hard to beat Re22. IMR4350 is another solid powder.

87 grain Berger VLD Hunting should shoot well. H4350 is a good powder to use.

I didn't have any load data for AC2700 and the 80gr GMX but I worked up a great one hole grouper which is 45gr and a CCI lrp for my M70 243 WSSM. Now I'm really going to have a hard time deciding which rifle to use next deer season.

I started with 40grs of A2700 powder and started getting accuracy at 43.4grs then moved up to 45gr without any pressure signs. Anyway I would like to move up another grain or so but I'm concerned about being real close to the point where pressure can spike fast. So if anybody has a pressure program I would like to know what it says for 46gr of A2700 and the 80gr gmx? Thanks

Moved up to 46gr of A2700 and saw some primer pressure signs but nothing scary yet and with the same one hole ragged group so I think I'm going to leave it there for hunting or throw a mag primer in the mix at 45gr.

I realize this is a old thread but that little 80 grn GMX will serve you well. The Whitetails don't come big enough to stop them. I have put some big corn fed deer down with it. I recovered 1 bullet out of I don't know how many I have killed with it. It was a frontal shot on a large doe at approx. 200 yards.Center punched the brisket and found it slightly protruding from a rear ham.It almost made it out. A picture perfect Barnes mushroom.

Tar, how fare do they usually go after the hit?

I do depredation control and I don't want to track them at all....I typically take high shoulder shots and they go straight down...if close enough they get beened. On the very few that I lung shot...the farthest one has run was approx. 50 yds...usually less. In my humble opinion copper is the only way to go...early on I slung some lead but was not impressed at all with the results...way to many death runs...dead deer was the end result but the surrounding cover is very thick and steep...fat boy didn't like dragging them up out of ravines...
