I have a question about the primers I'm using. I shoot the cva 45/70 conversation to SML. I worked up a load with 45 grains IMR 4227 with a 225 gr ftx bullet. It's light load but fits my powder columb keeping the bullet up in the rifling. My question is do I need to use magnum rife primers or large rife primers. I've been using the federal large rifle primers and it seems to be shooting good. Not sure if it would be better to use magnums or if there's a benefit. I also considered using large pistol primers but have no idea if there hot enough for what I'm shooting. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks

In my opinion, if you’ve already worked up a load using large rifle primers I don’t see the need to change. I use large rifle primers in my CVA with a DI and I have no plans to change now.

You can substitute Lg Pistol Magnum Primers for Lg rifle primers if you are in a pinch although your accuracy "may" change and it "may" require working up a new load. I use Lg rifle primers in my CVA with DIS as buckeye does and have no issues. I reserve Lg Rifle Magnum primers for cartridge guns with loads that exceed 65 to 70 grains and up, and I am sure they would do justice in a SML with the greater powder charges as well. If you have a decent load now....well, what buckeye said.

This question is easily answered by just "testing it yourself?". You are not going to blow the rifle up by doing it and then you will know for sure!

I actually prefer large rifle over the magnums in my muzzies and also my centerfire magnum rifles. Both of the above have lower standard deviation than the magnum primers in my testing. You will loose 10-15 fps on fast powders (4198) and 30 fps on slow powders (4350) using the large rifle vs the magnum.
Large magnum pistol primers can be substituted but beware. The metal used is .005 thinner than std rifle/magnum primers. This means they can’t take (and aren’t rated for) as much pressure. I have a friend that has been using them in a 260 Remington but he has lowered his load to stay out of pressure and uses that setup for a 13 year old to keep recoil low. As Flattopusa has said - use them in a pinch - and I suggest lower loads not the hot rod stuff. I haven’t tested them personally on a rifle or a muzzy. Maybe Flattopusa could give you some data- PM him - Here’s very knowledgeable.

If I had Large Rifle primers I wouldn't go to the trouble to find Magnums, not enough difference to spit at unless you are using a very large charge of very slow powder.

I use lighter loads, faster powders, DI and prefer LRPs. Lower ESs. On this board, 4227 is a comparatively fast powder.

So I have a question I just got one of the cva scout v2 set up by hanks. I’m doing magnum rifle primers and plan to use imr 4227 . With the Pittman bullets. I know 4198 is preferable but with the 4227 is 60 grains pretty safe that what everyone around my area is shooting out of theirs . Just wanted to find out from a professional.

Sorry sir I will be shooting the 300 grain Pittman bullets . Eve one around here that has one of the hanks cva they shoot ether 4198 or 4227 I have a bunch of 4227 from shooting in my savages so figured I would shoot the same powder in this one but of course more grains around 60 grain . Some of my buddies had 4198 and they are shooting 65-69 grains.

I personally shoot 4227 in my Hankins CVA conversation with a 275 Pittman. I use 53.5 grains of 4227 with a large rifle primer. With a 300 grain bullet, I would not go over 55 grains.
A CVA Scout vs a Savage ML2 is two completely different guns. Please understand that the barrel profile is different and the CVA. Also, the CVA has 4 holes drilled in the top of the barrel for your scope base.
I know a guy that was shooting 63 grains of 4227 with a 275 in a heavier profile barrel than a CVA and he was fracturing brass modules.
I would NOT advise anything over 55 grains of 4227……

I was just going by what my friends were shooting and I didn’t think it would be to bad but maybe I’m wrong Ok then , Be advised Hankins lists max safe load as 65gr of 4198 with a 275 gr bullet . This allows a small safety factor . THIS IS NOT A WIMPY LOAD . Im Not trying to rag as my concern is for SAFETY period . YOURS as well as FUTURE READERS OF THIS THREAD . IF Hotter charges are desired PLEASE build a more robust rifle than that CVA so it can be done SAFELY . REALIZE AS WELL these different smokless powders have vastly different pressure rises And ARE NOT all the same !!! We try to stay away from the lunatic fringe with loads for Good Reason . Everything made has limits . It would be nice to say that you are on your own with unapproved loads . The problem is when CATASTROPHY STRIKES it reflects on us all . Mistakes happen , such as a double load . Realize when you load especially unwise loads you could build a potential pipe bomb . How big of a explosition do you want ?? NO JOKE . PLEASE Respect the intelligent limits that were given . Show your buddys this thread as well . If tbey Dont Want to Listen Dont be ANYWHERE around when they shoot At the Very Least . Again - NO JOKE . SML is NOT the thing to Abuse Safe Loads with And Mark That Ramrod !!!

As far as 4198 65/69 grains looking at Hankins YOUTUBE videos he mentions 65 grains max with a 275 grain bullet, With these CVA SCOUTS your face neck unlike the bolt gun is right at the weak point of this ML, the breech,, Less than 65 and the 275 grainer will take any WHITETAIL deer out there out to 300 yards plus,IMO

The energy is there beoyond 400yds IF you can group them out there palm size !!! Dennis and Buckeye68 had a bang-up season this last year with their 4227 loads . They had deer hanging everywhere . Pretty impressive really !!! The point is theres No Need to risk life or limb to be effective hunting with that CVA . The SAFE loads given are DEVASTATORS !!!
