So been looking at all the items needed for SML Build on a Rem 700 ML Action. It got pretty expensive, Real Fast!!!! With Action, barrel, ignition, stock, recoil lug, bolt Nose kits, better trigger, rings, bases i hit $1500 On my calculator before turning a Wrench!!!! Then comes Optics!!! My New gun gonna be expensive. What say you guys? Price on Rem vs Savage Builds?

I'd say you are about right or perhaps even low.
You forgot smooth or full form dies. Boyds or other stock. Plug and bushing. Bedding.
Having the baddest muzzy in deer camp, priceless. Also keep in mind many of these builds are shooting with accuracy comparable to or better than most centerfire rifles. Again, priceless.

I'd put your total out of pocket expense, for a bolt gun, at 2K. And that's if you buy the parts yourself and have someone else assemble them. If your handy and can do all that yourself plus bed the stock....then MAYBE 1.5K
DO NOT fudge on the optics.

It ALL depends on what you want or expect from your HotRod Muzzeleloader . I have come to the conclusion that there is no AVERAGE SPML..... They are all individual's ....as are we. There are alternative options for EVERY aspect of a new build. Worse than a dern grocery list....but WAY MORE FUN ...till you hit the checkout! anyway...lol . My advice is to not settle for what you "THINK" can get by with. "Buy once Cry once" is being heard more often. Some have built several and progressed upward each time. Including myself. And I probably need to thin the herd some. The accuracy performance and dependability of these guns has grown so fast in the past 2 years it's almost alarming. So as I tend to advise . Go slow. Do ALL your homework. Explore ALL of the options. Make educated decisions. These guns have no " average cost" every option adds more $ . A lot of price depends on your "donor" gun and what parts of it you want to incorporate in to your build. The limiting factor is how much of the build you do yourself....and how much you elect to hire done.. don't want to evade the question....but there are just SO many variables good luck drop

Buy once and cry once is pretty good way to look At it!!! And u are right about taking it slow and Picking your parts and options. Its gonna be fun!!! Just considering selling my Stock Savage Due to the Prices they are going for now. Actually have a SS Laminate and a Blued In Synthetic stock. Selling these two would give me $$$&& towards Building Heck of a gun On my Rem 700 ML Action!!!

I was going to build and got lucky and found almost the perfect gun for sale, lightly used, and in perfect condition.

Don't know if it could be done today, but I did build on a 700ml which cost me $175, and went from there at a total cost of a little less than $1G, even installing a walnut stock on it. Luke spun the old barrel off, and the new one back on. Other than that, I did everything myself.
I got fancier with another one which came closer to your $1500, even doing everything myself, other than barrel removal and replacement.
Both are MOA shooters.

Shane! Ya gots 2 MLIIs? Easiest way is to rebarrel them. Not a really total custom deal but you can do it all yourself for the price of the barrel of your choice. You can easily add any extras ya need in smaller increments.
Like dannoboone post it can be done for less. And you did it yourself. I'm working on a 700ML based build now and it should come in at just under 1K before glass. a new barrel on one of my semi-stock MLIIs would be 1/2 that and already have glass etc...
And tuning a trigger, bedding and stock fitting, sling studs, bolt nose install and even barrel installation you should be able to do with a bit of help and coaching by the guys here. And you'll still have the best gun in deer camp.
OK, now you have been identifies as a SML addict, got 2 and want/building another? I started with a stock MLII, then bought a bulged barreled MLII and rebarreled it with a take off, then an Encore conversion, then 2 700ML builds and now working on my 3rd 700ML platform gun. None are really fancy just the best guns in hunting camp or club house. None look very special but they all shoot great.
The cheapest was the MLII bulged barrel blue/black gun, $200 for the gun and got a NIB 50 cal SS take off barrel for $50 and installed it myself. $250 before glass and it shoots great and with those Speer 300 grain .458 cal bullets it kills like lightning.
Hope all goes well. 10

You can easily add any extras ya need in smaller increments. That's what I did with my laminated SS 10MLII (first "build"). What an improvement! If I had that one to do over again, I would go with the new style plug and matching barrel from Arrowhead Sporting Goods, along with a trued barrel nut and recoil lug. That's only four needed items. And you'll still have the best gun in deer camp.... so long as Jeff, Kyle, or deadeye isn't sitting there!

I just built a center fire conversion SML off a savage model 12 bvss. Total cost is right at $1800. Folding Ramrod, smooth sizing die, vortex viper PA scope, powder vials, prefit McGowan .458 barrel, modified savage bushing breech plug, squared barrel nut, squared recoil lug, 209 bolt head, rifle basix sav2 trigger and the original rifle cost. 200 yard group and the upper left shot I pulled.
