I made this back when I had a .375 and it is turned down to fit that size bore but will work in .40s & .45s as well the small thumb knob on the slide is used as a depth gauge so you know how far to drill and when you bottom the puller out it has been used several times and has worked every time except when the dude hammered on his bullets from both ends. for the guys that don't have one? you might want to consider adding it to your load box, it can save a hunt. My buddy double loaded his gun the day before Illinois gun season this year but caught it with his witness mark, he called me in a sheer panic but there was nothing I could do for him until he got his gun home, he ended up hunting with a loaned slug gun. View AttachmentLooks like it would work just as well, and I like the depth gage idea. I would definitely recommend having one in the tool box as well. It would be terrible to have a ruined hunt when one of these pullers could have you back up in a few minutes.

UPDATE: I’ll start by apologizing for being adamant that it was not double loaded! Apology accepted!

The number one reason for double loads is a gun being loaded from a previous outing, many times from last hunting season, that seems to be a reoccurring theme, a simple skylight check thru the plug will tell the tale every time. for a bolt gun simply slide the bolt out and point it skyward and if you see light thru the bushing you are good to go, if not it's time to dig deeper. break actions are even easier.

UPDATE: I’ll start by apologizing for being adamant that it was not double loaded! It was in fact double loaded, and had it not been for the witness mark on the ramrod I would have definitely tried to shoot it. I cannot for the life of me remember loading it, and don’t have a clue when I did. The puller works great, very simple to drill the base of the bullet with the supplied drill attachment that goes on a rod that rotates in a guide that’s sized to fit in the receiver to center the drill on the bullet base. Simply change out the drill for the threaded screw, screw it in the hole that was just drilled in the base of the bullet, put the slide on the rod and slap hammer the bullet out the breech. A few light slides and the bullet eased right out. A few taps on the ramrod that was stuck on the bullet, and it came right out the breech as well. MARK THAT RAMROD! Check and RECHECK if in doubt completely clear out the barrel, look thru the barrel see daylight , check with ram rod witness mark and start over, Put RED DUCT TAPE over the muzzle if left CHARGED with powder and a bullet to remind yourself and others its loaded ! WOW ! I'll show you the reasons why!!!

Personally I don't like staring down the business end of a barrel, that's why I say look for daylight thru the plug, quick and easy. Whatever the method, we should make sure we are unloaded before loading, period. Witness marks are great If you pay attention BUT what I have noticed many times especially at matches is guys using a range rod instead of their normal hunting rod that usually is marked.
Precisely the reason when we have a match we stress in the safety rules, first remove the bolt and see daylight before we begin the match and you must use a marked ramrod.
If you have a marked rod others can visually see if someone has made a mistake. Believe me, several mistakes have been caught by on lookers before the shot was fired, not necessarily a double load but mistakes in general.

Glad the puller worked great for you but I’m really really glad you had a witness mark on your ramrod. Good catch!! Good call on the double load. I should have known with it being about 3” off witness, and the fact that it wasn’t moving anymore with pretty sharp raps from a hammer. I’ve had enough hammer downs to know it should’ve moved, but I was also positive it wasn’t already loaded. Definitely glad I respected the witness mark. I know from personal experience how easy it is to get distracted during loading causing the drop of a second tube of powder and pushing a second bullet. I also know how valuable for safety a witness mark is on the rifle's ramrod, saved me from disaster on two occasions. I also know first-hand how well the Hankins bullet-puller works. And finally, I know the benefit of attending Kentucky Challenge shoots meeting a bunch of talented, experienced shooters all willing to offer knowledge and assistance. And thanks again to buckeye68 for having a brand new Hankins Bullet-Puller at the match allowing me to finish the event. The puller is now a permanent resident of my shooting toolbox.
