Hello,
I am new to this forum. I have searched for a barrel selection thread and did not find one. If this is a duplicate request I apologize in advance and would appreciate being directed to the existing threads.
I am building a new rifle using a 700 SA. One of my most important criteria is keeping the rifle weight down.
I will be more than happy with the performance of a break action, or pre-fit barrel. As an eastern woods hunter I don't see myself ever exceeding a 65 grain 4198/250-275 projectile load (probably less), but I would like to build with a shouldered barrel. I just prefer the traditional look.
So the question is what is the lightest contour barrel I can safely consider? I almost dropped the hammer to order a #6 Brux from Jeff this morning, but thought I would ask you guys if I can go with anything lighter?

I would Definitely ask Jeff that Question he is the one building it and knows more than most of us. I would go by his recommendation. JMO I have a # 6 contour on my hunting rig and I shoot the 78gr , 275 accumax load and it is very accurate.

+1 on asking Jeff that question . This has come up before but its best you two thouroghly discuss this beforehand . Lighter can be used with Strict User Disapline as has been posted previously on a 45 . Theres no margin for error on your part so Realize This if its pushed and/or the idea pursued !!! A Super Nice one has been written about a bit under Sews Ultralight 40 / "The Diamond" , that isnt on the ragged edge concerning safer operation or comfort to shoot . You may want to consider such a build . At 8 lbs scoped its a Sweetheart !!! I wish my 40 wouldve followed this example the first time around !!! Its apart now to do just that .....

A modified #6 Brux works very well for a light build Have used many in that configuration

Thank you for the replies. I also found this thread "New Rigs: What I wish I had done differently". Very helpful

1-20 twist works very well for anything you would want to shoot from a #6, I have used 16,18,19 & 20 twist, all work but overall I think the 20 is a good choice.

Yes, 1-20. I have shot both the 1-20 and 1-18. Unless you were going to shoot only 325 and 350 grain bullets? I would stick with 1-20. I was surprised when one of our members won the challenge shooting a 1_28 with 300 Aero Max!!
