Now hear this haha ! Its a H&A Underhammer kit from Pecatonica River out of IL. They did not have a bbl. in the cal i wanted in stock. Also would be in the Fall to get one but not the twist rate i wanted but what the bbl. Company would build. I passed on that, i rather get what i want its my rifle. I got a bbl. maker this morning that is going to make mine. Octagon 7/8" 32" length, bore .400/.408, BP 5/8"x18 no dove tales no open sights. I am putting glass on this bad boy tick toter killer. BBL should be here in late Spring, i will drill n tap 1/4x28 for a Mag-Spark 209 primer. Using 180-250 gr conicals. Either or both T-7 3 F or Swiss 3 F Black. Think i will start around the 40 gr mark n work up. Just going to be my Tick Toter killer

With me living very close to the Pecatonica River in north-central Illinois, I was intrigued by your post and rifle terminology. I google searched to find Pecatonica River Long Rifle Supply Company. Very cool, I've never heard of an "under-hammer" design, now I'm enlightened! Was this design something available back in 1700's or 1800's history or is it a recent modern design? Thanks for sharing some interesting educational information.

Underhammer started in 1825 n was a pistol of Germanic origin. Was not too long others jumped on the bandwagon n made the design into rifles/ML's. Very interesting n i just love the design n its a direct ignition

Nice. A few years ago, after I retired, I build a 36-caliber squirrel rifle with peep sights for hunting. (Bucket list thing for 30 years). Killed a lot of game and it is just plain fun to use. Old eyes aren't very good anymore. I had a 54 caliber that I purchased on Clearnce dirt cheap, Decided I wanted a 40 caliber. Had Gun Werk's in Oregon make me a 30" octagon barrel matching the 54 profile installed a # 11 cap BP. Now I have a switch barrel gun. Drilled and tap for a 4X scope. This thing is nothing but fun and shoots lights out with PRB What conical are you going to use? I'm interested in trying as well. Can cast them if I have to. Trans Yank

I am slow to be researching. I have found some molds n Bullet makers have fairly decent line up of gr weight bullets. 145 gr, 160 gr, 175 gr, 180 gr, 185 gr, 200 gr, 210 gr, 220 gr, 240 gr, 250 gr, 275 gr & 300 gr. I think i will be able to find a few that will shoot well for me

I doubt i can get the light weight bullets to shoot well. I maybe able to use 25-45 gr of powder with any less than 175 gr. Most likely 175 gr up will choot well with 60-85 gr of powder. Its not that a 1:24 is that fast of a twist rate in a .40. I have never shot bullets from a .40, last .40 i had i used .395 prb as it had a 1:48 twist
