I just found an old stash of these (blue tip) that I bought years ago to use in my .50 cal. Savage, but never used them as I decided to go with 275 BE's instead at the time.
Have any of you Guys used these Sabotless for deer, and if so how did they perform for you? IIRC they are supposed to be less frangible than SST's & standard Shock Waves at shorter ranges.
Appreciate any input you may have to offer.
Thanks,
YB

Heard a lot over the years about the difference between the Hornady 250gn bullets....Blue tips, yellow tips, old style red tips, new style red flex tips, FTX's...Lots of ideas floating around on web. Any how, one night I cut one of each with my bandsaw to see if there is a noticible difference....Bottom line is that they all had the same jacket thickness. Only difference were the tips when they changed to the flex tip. The flex tip SST's and the FTX's are identical just labeled different. Don't know what a bonded bullet is supposed to look like...All are killers

yes I shot them back in my 50 days and they are definitely a better deer bullet than the non bonded, the only difference is the core is bonded to the jacket. they don't frag nearly as bad at smokeless speeds.

I shot 2 does with them with 62 gr of h4198 in my 45 at 60 yds and 40 yds. Both deer went less than 50' and both were pass thru's

Thanks Bill. Yeah, I remember reading that they were much improved over the original SST's particularly, which as you mentioned were bad for fragmenting in our guns, especially at the shorter ranges I hunt.
Appreciate the input.

1. Were these Rib shots or did you hit any heavy bone?
2. Do you know roughly what the MV of that load might be?
3. Did you use a wad?
Thanks again,
YB

Yankee bill I never chronied the load but think in the 24-2500 fps range. One shot was ribs only and other was in shoulder and out ribs. I use a felt wad when shooting the 45 sabotless I forgot about an 8 point a couple years earlier 50 cal with sabots, high shoulder in and outaround 75 yds. This load was probably 2300ish fps. This dear dropped in its tracks but took a couple minutes to die

Thanks hunter. On those shoulder shots, would you consider the amount of meat damaged to be average, or, more extensive as we've seen with some of the more frangible bullets?
Thanks again for the info. YB

I would say average, it was nothing compared to some of the carnage I have seen photos of from the parkers at 3000 fps. 45 in and less than an inch out. I edited the post to read 24-2500 fps
