Has anyone tried this powder in a bolt action SML? Hodgdon advertises it as a temp insensitive powder, which is important to many of us. It also looks like it is available at several online retailers, which is also appealing, given the scarcity of powder and other components.

I think it’s a ball powder but you could use some stick powder underneath it to keep it from going through your bushing hole. I tried shooers world match powder and it’s a fine ball powder in my 45cal without even a stick powder booster underneath it and it shot great.

I have never used a ball powder in anything, that being said, maybe Richard will chime in as he has tried just about anything you could think of.

What YankeeReb said. 5gr N110 should do it. Do you know the burn rate?

It all depends on the burn rate Look on the burn rate chart and see where it lands in relation to known powders, then you will have a better idea

I looked it up and it’s 129 on the burn rate chart which is pretty slow for anything.45 cal except for maybe the really heavy bullets like 325s or better suited for 350s?
.40 cal it might be a better choice with heavier bullets?

I think that’s Staball 6.5 that’s 129 on the burn chart. There’s also Staball match that’s being talked about for heavy .223 type loads. I haven’t seen where it lands on the burn chart yet. Then there’s the Staball HD that’s being tauted for new PRC chambering’s. I’ve heard burn rate similar to Retumbo which interests me for my RUM’s. Just hearsay, but supposedly the Staball 6.5 is extremely temp insensitive. I’m hoping the whole line is, and maybe the Match will have a place in smokeless ML.

Still on the slow side for a .45, especially for bullets lighter than 325 grains.
you can always try it? where we get into trouble is using a too fast powder per bullet weight. My hunch is that it will not burn well with anything lighter than the 325 BUT I've been wrong before. Keep in mind powders are designed to operate in a specific pressure zone, as many have found out, if the pressure is low from a too slow powder the burn will not be complete resulting in a very nasty barrel.

Use the right amount of imr4759 or n110 or even a5744 for a booster should make it burn faster.

Staball Match has a burn rate close to Varget.
Temp-Insensitive is relative. Staball is very good for a ball powder but not as good as some stick powders.

Yea im begining to wonder if how boosters and the booster/main is commonly looked at is all that there is or if we arent overlooking / under utilizeing things a bit ?? Just my opinion but we may be ..... definately worth thinking about anyway .

Just know that 5744 is one dirty dog. Be prepared to brush between shots!

I have used H-335 (ball powder) with good results with N-110 as a booster and "blocker" to mitigate the ball powder from entering the bushing hole. But... H-335 was more in line with 4198's burn rate. If these slow rate powders do not fully burn, you will get flames out the muzzle and a dirty bore.
