Mitch here is a link to a podcast with Dr. Ed Ashby on Barnes bullets. Talks about twist rate and effects. I have seen definite rotational damage done shooting 1-7” 300 blackout. This is a good listen but Barnes stuff starts at about 12min. Around 25mim he starts talking arrows. podbay.fm/p/live-to-hunt-and-fish-podcastEpisode 34 Wow that’s an awesome episode. Thanks so much for sharing. Part 2 is even better. Just an incredible interview. I was blown away when buddy was talking about killing zebra with a 45gr Berger out of a 22 Hornet. Wow. His comments about Barnes and twist rate makes me worry a little about my crazy fast 22-250AI with its 1:7 twist. Need. Heavier. Barnes. Lol. Man I wish there was a 90-100gr monolithic hunting bullet out there…

It is a little contradictory to drive them as fast as you cam.

It's funny, in a hunting group I used to be in, every once in a while the old terminal ballistics discussion would pop up again, and there was this one guy that always compared bullets to arrows, and my retort to him was so consistent that he'd head me off before I'd even get to say it "I KNOW, Mitch, you say bullets kill with energy and arrows kill with momentum, but..." and then he'd continue on saying whatever wrong thing he was about to say, lol.
But even still, when I got my new compound bow a couple years ago out came my chrony and I was disappointed with the speed and started thinking "hmmm, what components could I swap out to get the arrows light so they'll be faster and maybe I can eke out some more kinetic energy...". Listening to Dr. Ashby it was so obviously correct and all that came flooding back to my memory and I just went "oh Mitch, you freaking moron"

I could talk for days on the archery thing. Long story short. Shooting 80 pounds high winds light arrow it didn’t penetrate shoulder blade. Next year wife wants to archery hunt with 40 pound bow. Well it worked for me 25years ago why not last year. In enters my knowledge of Dr. Ed Ashby. 40 pounds from modern bow will absolutely get 100% penetration in front half of a deer no matter angle or bone. Heavy arrows make bows quieter and shorter blood trails. I kinda felt stupid I didn’t learn how effective heavy was when I started shooting bow. The coppers can have a dramatic spinning cut effect. The 8.6 Blacout and it’s 1-3” twist is proving it.

Sweet jesus, 1:3 twist. I'm not familiar with the 8.6 Blackout. Just looked it up, that's ridiculous haha.
I haven't shot any of my bows in a couple years now. Should dust them off (and take a good hard look at what I'm shooting for arrows and heads, thanks to you and Dr. Ashby). There's a really nice Mulie hanging around the next quarter over from me (almost helped my neighbour shoot it last year but couldn't get into position) and my zone is low-probability draw for rifle but is open season for archery.

I find the video about the .220 Swift misleading at best. He never mentions bullet construction at all and at speed, it is paramount to have a stout bullet. This was the same problem I encountered with my .250 Savage. I like his reference to the book, Use Enough Gun. Unless you are disciplined and ethical in shot placement and bullet selection.
