How many people do it and how successful are you? I'm looking forward to our annual trip. Tons of fun! I call it Easter egg hunt for grown folks. Last year we found 51 in three days. Anywhere from little spikes to 80" sheds.

I don't go looking for them but have found a few over years by accident. They are always chewed up by mice and squirrels before I find them..

I don't make a special trip just to shed hunt but find a few when rabbit and turkey hunting.

That's a lot of bone you found! What do you do with the sheds you find? We just keep them. If someone in the group kills that deer they get the sheds also.

its a waste of time here in Tn, I have found several when I hunted in ILLinois but very hard to find here and not worth keeping when you do..
It would be a lot of fun though when you can find sheds like that..

I shed hunt Here in Arizona for elk and deer. I hunt them mainly for the fun of finding a big shed and elk are up to $12 a pound, so it pays for the gas. We get shed hunters from all over the southwest here in Arizona because of our famous big elk. I did not do as much when gas was up to four bucks a gallon as I would drive 180 miles round trip some days to get to the better elk units. Some states out west have restricted the shed hunting as guys were harrassing the animals at a critical time when they are under stress from winter. Its fun, Ray

I look for them just on my farm. Found 5 last year and I would estimate 25 or so in the last 10 years. Some quite small, some not. Generally I am out in March and the critters have not chewed on them yet. Found one last year by the river that was heavily chewed on, muskrat or beaver or squirrel vs. mice? Also when I CRP burn my tall grass I find some in there.
I almost enjoy it as much as deer hunting, know they made it through the winter and will be bigger for the most part next year.

My best is 27 in one day around 70 or so for that year. The last 2 years have been bad for me finding them. I think some one beats me to them.

I have found my biggest sheds the first week of Jan. He who loses the most testosterone will lose his antlers first.

I never intentionally go shed hunting as my hunting lease is 4.5 hours from the house. I have found a few in the spring when we go there for a work weekend. But likewise, the critters have usually gotten to them first.

I've seen on the hunting shows where they have two or three years of the sheds from a particular buck that has finally been harvested. I think most of these TV show hunters have access to their own or private land where they can watch the bucks over four, five or six years and nobody else can get on the land to hunt or collect the sheds. Must be nice.

391 , When do you start shed hunting? Bestill, Let me know if your up to some walking and we can meet up and look for some sheds. I start now but the majority of bucks will still have horns on there heads. Look in bedding areas of your big bucks as they tend to fall off first. I seen a 160 plus last night with 1 side missing and a small 4 point with 1 side. I did watch a small 6 shake off his horns the first week of ML season last year.

What a hoot! I have tried this on a limited basis with little success. Anything I have ever found was by accident. Never anything big.

I find a few when trapping or late season hunting rabbit, squirrel or spring turkeys. Have never found one in an active agricultural field but in CRP or fallow fields of course. Some nice ones too. Good indicator of where nice ones will be next season. 10

I don't go out of my way to look for them but my dog and dogs I've had over the years will bring home some nice ones off my property. That said I don't have the heart to take them away so I let my dog sharpen his teeth on them.
